Hopefully I will see a lot more blue come spring! I have my two older EE's, and five 16 week old birds. Not certain of genders on all but I am sure at least 3/5 are girls. Thanks to this patch of warm I have been getting some eggs lately, but not as many as I should see next spring. Not all hatchery birds are awful! I've had several hatcheries birds that were very nice birds. Hatcheries can be a wonderful option for someone who isn't all that interested in showing. The only problem with hatcheries is the "Americana" thing. When people buy from a hatchery, they naturally feel inclined to think they are actually getting that breed. If you don't mind an EE then a hatchery "americana" can be a good source for blue/green egg layers. I would really love a few Araucanas! I love my Araucana cross and her sassy rumpless butt. I'd love it more if she'd just lay already.
Don't forget the debate on the reds. Those RIR groups get pretty harsh on people that have new hampshire or production reds and call them RIR's. I have found that I like the hatchery and mixed breeds better because some of them are really unique.
