"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I don't see a problem with that!

X2!!!

That chicken doesn't even look right. Why would w breed something like that?!

What also freaks me out are those little chickens with the freaky long legs, modern game bantams I think.

Silkies were my first breed of chicken. I personally love them.

I don't mind all silkies but I don't like anything where I can't see their eyes. Polish used to freak me out until I met someone that keeps them trimmed just above the eyes. The whole looking like a rubber chicken thing just doesn't work for me but I don't judge people that like them. I also feel bad for those ones that have legs as thick as my wrist (I think they are from Japan).

Hi, this is my first post. Thank you everyone for your posts because it's really helped me get this far. Got my coop ordered and food and bedding lined up. I'm thinking I might start with young poulets but don't know where to look. Have had my eye on craigslist. I would like mixed breeds to get to learn about their differences. I'm only wanting 4-5 hens at most. BTW I live in New Orleans, LA
WELCOME DEAUX!!!!!

Ask anything ya want! We dont know much about some things and a lot about some other things... but with this group, we love a challenge!

My hens FINALLY came out of the coop at 2pm when my youngest called the little dogs back in the house. She has a higher pitch voice and she always calls the animals with a sing-song kind of call. I guess maybe the hens thought they were going to get a treat. Lol! They are still out. Its pretty funny how they are walking through the snow.

I guess this weather timed itself ok. We bought some potatoes on sale a few days ago (33cents a lb) so we could can some in quart jars. Then my husband brought home some that were given to us. Its A LOT!! So I am canning today and also have the dehydrator going with thin slices of the potatoes. I love au gratin potatoes with cheese!!!
Have never canned potatoes before...send me a message with some tips.

Sounds delicious!!! Made copycat Wendy's chili for lunch; fried catfish for supper. It's still only 30 degrees here! c-c-c-c-cold!!! if Jim's family sent this snow down for his birthday; they can take it all back now!!
Boiled cabbage, Sliced ham, and purple hull peas, and sweet potato casserole.... THEN a cobbler with berries from our yard...
Fishing at 6am so PRAY for me! This man-o-mine is just crazy.... Hopefully, I stocked up with pine straw good enough around the coop edges for their water to not freeze up again! No more chance of snow for us us here in north Louisiana until Tuesday...

All of my "official" books say not to can potatoes, split peas, or cabbage. I don't know why, they must have when canning for your family was a big thing. I have since found out that you can can cabbage (tried) with a pressure canner and I haven't had a bad batch yet. I would love to know if someone has tried or knows why they are against canning potatoes. I wonder if it has something to do with people not properly cleaning them or green skin like in chickens.

. Be careful of Craigslist. There are probably some people here that could suggest better alternatives. I got my birds from a hatchery (mypetcicken.com) there are several places. The feed stores should be getting some in soon also.
Buy them from a person referred to you from someone you know or someone on here... or a feed supply store definitely! Craigs list, ya just never know.
