Yup we want Turkey's and those are beautiful! Bit far tho
lol
Might take a meaties break for summer...one 80 degree weekend had them roasting
and smells...big batches now should sustain us and regular customers for the summer months, so when we stop them for the season, we have to pick up another creature to strut their stuff right? And turkeys take awhile to get good breeding stock bred and growing so better sooner than later? Lol
A few trades were offered last year for plants I have and I didn't take them, wasn't prepared
same breeders might be looking now and I'm happy to trade tons of my tropicals for poults this coming season
Check with kuntrygirl here soon as the turkeys should be starting up #friskybusiness I think I will put in an order this year and be able to follow thru with the pick up this time things are just better now than in the past(long story)
Got 65 quail Yesterday. 45 are A&M, 12 Manchurian, and 8 Brown. The breeder told me how messy they were so I was thinking they were like broilers and put them in the broiler brooder. I was really wrong! They are much worse then broilers so I had to pull out one of the old industrial brooders from the barn (too cold out there to leave it there, I'd have to check every 5 min to make sure). Has anyone ever used one of those before? The bar across the top is warming along with the light but the light keeps flicking on and off and I don't understand why (first time with this thing). The heat is staying on and holding a good temp. I lost one of the A&M's last night to drowning in a quail waterer. I have another one that was given to me free that seems to have crook neck and is about half the size of the rest. I got her not only because she is a she, but also because she is the strongest, fastest, and most ample eater there is. She shoves everyone else out of the way to get what she wants whether it is food, water, or heat. These were taken within a minute of putting them in this brooder...see the mess already? At least this one has a wire floor....
Because of playing swap a roo with them and my normal cleaning schedule I had to put the chicken chicks in a bathtub for about an hour. This picture was taken right after I put them in there. They keep their brooder pretty well clean but make a mess in a bathtub. I blame the mess on the Polish! They figured out scratching outside the first week and now if supplied with a feeder without a top they go scratching away.
I lost one of the Molted Java last night and don't know why (hatchery chicks), so that leaves me with 5 out of 6 of them. It wasn't cold, not squished, acted normal up until it flipped over and died (yes, I mean back flip). The rest I got from Bugglesmommy. Look at her 2 polish staring at the camera! I have to build a better grow out pen for them to move outside. The one I have is for extreme heat not cold and they are too small to be dealing with this weather without heat.
While doing all this I broke 3 heat lamp bulbs and need another heat lamp base. My big girls needed heat last night because once again they were wet from the rain. Every bulb was because I unplugged the lamp and put it somewhere that got knocked over by my butt. At least they weren't plugged in at the time! Did you know the quail make the prettiest calls to each other? I found that out last night. Pretty speckled eggs here I come!
Brought Blue inside, even in the coop she seemed to be pacing trying to keep babies together (lots of wander room lol) so she is happy again in the brooder while this cold front passes
Hubby saw this rat in the dark and got him, one shot from a good distance, yay...another one bites the dust! And another one down....
New meme I LOVE! I need to get this sign lol
Old meme I LOVE...
Here's me holding a monkey! Happy Fat Tuesday y'all, please be kind and remember that some poor girl cleans up all that crap at the public parades and parties! Use a trashcan or get near a bathroom! Lol
Note its on a Polaroid...my kids are in awe of this ancient photo lol
I love the chick stick sticking its little head out so cute.
We have the same taste I want that sign too. That would make a good tee shirt.
Hubby a good shot!!
I grew up next to a lady that had a chimp. She had signs made to keep people off her property.
After Katrina I found one of the signs. When the rain stops I'll take a pic. You'll want one of these too. Monkey girl lol.

Those little black and whites the mottled javas? They are so cute! Polish chicks can be trouble makers but all of my polish have grown into the sweetest birds. I love quail calls. I sold my quail flock last year because I needed their pen but I may get some more when I get around to building another pen.

Aw, I love the messy babies! Lol. I was at the feed store one day when they were cleaning up after the quail. Wow, it was bad, hahaha!!! Guess they are just messy. Cutie polish!

Yup, they are the Java. They will be black with a bunch of pure white speckles when they get older. You are welcome to some quail eggs for hatching when I get them separated and penned up (haven't tried incubating yet). I would like to keep them all together but everyone says to pen them out 4 hens to 1 roo. I am in the process of building slant pens so the eggs roll to the front and give them all a nesting box even though they don't use them. I can't see not giving them a house of some sort even if they are in an enclosure.

I ended up putting a large trash bag on the poop collection tray for now, I'll pick up some newspaper tomorrow so it can be composted. It took way too long and too much soap and scrubbing to clean the brooder they were in last night.
