"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Proud mama, hatched some eggs from my Welsummer hen and Blue Copper Maran Rooster. Hoping for some dark egg layers, and a larger size egg than the welsummer produces.

Thanks everyone! LDK thanks for the info. It didn't seem to burn her that could be because she is in shock . I choose the honey water for now. It has antibacterial properties and amino acids and vitamins and minerals . If things change and look infected I'll switch to antibiotics. Will be giving extra protein for feather growth . Primrose I can't believe only one was attacked and as badly as she is they left her. My neighbor said it was six dogs which baffles me. She said all of them looked like the same mixed breed. We don't get strays around here let alone a pack. We walk our dogs all the time and have never seen any one with six dogs. I will report to animal control so they can see if they find any back here. I really think it's someone's dogs that got out. Their will be no more free range till I'm sure they aren't coming back. They came on my property. If they do again I will try to pen them and call the pound. I have zero tolerance for negligent dog owners. Let them go pay 75 per dog to get them back. All the hens are traumatized my oldest EE went in the new coop. That's not her coop. She went in and went to the highest perch. They All came running to the chicken yard that is fenced when Ron started calling them. Thanks for all the well wishes. I will post her road to recovery so all new eggs will have an idea on doctoring injured chickens. It's a good idea to get some of the things for a chicken first aid kit. Pam

Just finished reading up on fermenting food. I will have to give it a try this week. I gave my chickens a herb dessert today with mint, oregano, basil, garlic, crushed pecans and a slice of orange mixed up in a dish. I had to put the two older hens in the coop and let the three little hens get some first. As soon as I let the two big hens out, the little ones scattered.

Please look up good and bed things for chickens to eat. I think citrus is a no,no, I could be wrong but I think I read it.

Hey FishaRneKed, good to have you. Nice coop, dog and baby. Cute, cute, cute. I was going to caution you about the lock on your coop, but I bet a coon will not willingly get into the yard with that dawg.

Thanks everyone for the welcoming. The lock yes, I drilled a hole at an angle and have a nail holding the 2in piece of wood from swiveling. ya, a coon would easily swivel the latch without a nail in it. But Repo and Rocket do keep everything out of the yard.

You're right, Pam, citrus is not recommended. There is a list that I printed up a while back. I stick closely to the list, but some people dump any scraps out for the chickens. I never give citrus. The list is what you should feed your chickens with a list at the end of what not to feed.
Try:www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens

Also, remember that good feed is designed to fulfill nutritional needs of the chickens. Feeding too many treats will prevent them from eating enough of the feed.

:lau I totally did post those recently :gig

Happy mothers day to you too and all the other mommies :)
Poor baby! Least she's got mama to doctor her up! Good job.

I appreciate tons of pics especially when an injury or somethin unique or confusing happens! Even if those pics are graphic.

My fav are still Prim's chicken hoo-ha pics :gig

Hey, wait a second Angel. I saw those bunny hoo-ha fotos you posted. Lol.
Happy Mom's Day to you and all the other LA-yer moms out there.
Pam, so sorry about the attack. But, so glad it's only one injured chicken. A pack of dogs can do a lot of damage. She's looking pretty good after Dr. Pam fixed her up.

Thanks for posting this link! I needed to refresh my memory! Happy Mother's Day to all!

Feeding...man I love feeding a variety!

I tried penned birds on strict pellet high quality diet and they lived fine and were ok looking but never really got to LIVE and be beautiful!
Since moving down South we free range dawn til dusk every day. They have clear access to about 6 acres but really only use about 3 of those.

With free ranging, I feed fermented feed. I Frickin LOVE it. I use dry feed to distract or gather chickens only now :gig
It has saved me soooo much money and made my girls look fantastic. I'll never look back since growing out CX meaties on FF.
So they range and get FF and that's plenty to thrive but I grow an organic herb garden for the chickens and rabbits. Adding 10x's the berries next year even lol
Each individual rabbit & the flock of chickens are fed a small amount of fresh cut herbs daily. I also clip/trim and top my herb plants regularly to promote growth and bushiness then I use those cuttings to sprinkle in chicken nest boxes (they love them and play with them while laying lol)
I grow mint, oregano, thyme, Vietnamese cilantro, Mexican tarragon, dill, basils, sage, rosemary & Mexican cilantro. A handful or two of any combination or even some of each is just lovely for they're systems.

I also offer all our meat carcasses and table scraps from dinner (chickens/turkey/rabbit/beef bones/pork bones/fish parts and organs from our own processed animals. We eat well as a family and the majority of our "scraps" would probably make a great meal lol)

Everything in moderation :bun
