"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

It sounds like a good deal. I know that the 1588 is a really good brand. I was going to caution you to check out Amazon first but they are still cheaper and you get free shipping. I paid $133 for my Fleming Farming Innovator brand with shipping and I'm not really satisfied. It could be me. How do I know? I'm still so ignorant of all this stuff

But the reviews on the 1588 are good. Look into dry hatching. There are threads on here. You'll get a better hatch rate. I would not hatch good birds the first time. Wait for spring. Get some hatching eggs locally and practice. This is my advice and I'm sticking to it. I didn't follow it of course and did GREAT the very first hatch. BUT CackleJoy has been trained on how to pack eggs well and the Marraduna are supposed to have extra good hatch rates. Keep us in the loop.

( I forgot you are in Ruston, I was thinking local in Bossier/Haughton.)
Thank you! :)

That's good advice to practice. I will research dry hatch. I may not get a chance to practice. I really don't want to wait. Guess we'll find out in a month or so if there will be eggs available.
I got a reply from XW ranch on the barred rocks. In Spring, 50$ a dozen for the eggs plus shipping, 10$ a chick.
I want to hear something on the Dorkings before I commit to the rocks.

By the way I've been wanting to thank you again for the suggestion on the Ussary book " The Small Scale Poultry Flock". It's got great info. I've learned a lot. Right up my alley.

Thanks again Linda.

Campingshaws, sorry to hear your having such a rough time with your birds.

Thanks, Cody. That's what I get for jumping straight to auction birds without knowing anything first. Trial by fire, I guess. I've always been really good at caring for sick/injured animals; not knowing how to help is the worst part. Thankfully everyone here knows what to do and I just have to follow directions. :D

It will be dropping below freezing this week in LA. Any tips from people that have been through a few winters down here? From everything I have read, the chickens should be fine and my only concern might be the water freezing if it stayed below 32 deg.

It's not sour like old milk or spoiled food, but just smells unpleasant. Like wet feed on old damp wood. Poop is 90% water with a few solid bits and bright green, no blood. It looks like when it's hot and they're drinking a lot of water, which I guess is because she's getting fluids but wasn't eating much.

Ok that makes me think she had sour croop. The feed stays in the croup too long turns sour and makes them sick. They can die from it. This is my you should ask us you can google yourself but their are many illnesses that have simular systems. Do you have flat coke? It took primrose a week to get out of the woods and a while longer before she was back to normal. Pam

I got my hands on some tylan 50 today, should I give her that? I was thinking of giving it to all of them with gunky eyes.

I wouldn't it could just be allergies just from the pollens right now. Take a deep breath step back an let's think things there. If you just give your whole flock antibiotics you kill all the good bacteria in their gut which is where the immune systems start. I wouldn't do it right now. Do they have other symptoms? If so what are they? Pam

They have more trouble with heat than cold. That's assuming you don't have tropical breeds. You may need fresh water just like you were saying. Good to here fro you. Any new additions? Pam

Linda, I got in contact with Cacklejoy. Her birds are molting at the moment. She said to get back with her in about a month.

Guess I need to start looking at incubators. :) Everybody probably already knew that would be the next thing I'd bring up. LOL

So got any suggestions for a 30-50 egg incubator? One that won't brake the bank :)

I was looking at this one on the Stromberg site "Electronic Thermostat Circulated Air Picture Window Hovabator Incubator - 1588" with the automatic turner.

If you want to jump right in get a Brinsea advance auto. It's fully automatic. Pam

Poor thing, she just has so much going on at once. :(

No flat coke.

Take a breath, ok. That's exactly what I tell my kids when they get worked up. Great minds must think alike. ;)

Symptoms: Nasal discharge, mostly. They take turns having bubbles in their eyes. At least one hen has a thick glob of something like pus on/in her eyelid. I'm going to give them all thorough checks in the morning, which is one full week since my last work-through. After going through casportpony's wet pox thread I guess I'm just pretty concerned about a hen losing an eye to infection.

It sounds like your right pus is infection. Could also be respertory problem too.the flat coke is for sour croup you give them a good bit and it dissolves any sour grain so they can pass it. Pam
Pox comes from mosquitos so it has nothing to do with the auction.
