"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Terri make sure if she is getting birds to show for 4-H that she checks the American Poultry Association for accepted breeds and colors. We made the mistake not checking before and bought birds that the kids couldn't even show. They could go to the show, but would not be considered for more than a lower ribbon if they are not approved colors.

You 2 are a hoot. At least you both know what breeds you are buying and do your research. I don't understand why some people constantly post pictures on Fb, saying, "I just bought these birds, what are they??". Same thing, over and over. Strange way to deal with animals.

I'm guilty of that; I ended up with speckled sussex because I thought they were jubilee orpingtons. At the auction they rarely say anything more than "hen/pullet/rooster," except anything gray/white is either a "dominecker" or a "kookoo maran." So I usually don't trust that anyway (ie my Rhode Island whites that aren't really white at all).

But we're not really looking for more than pets with occasional eggs, at least for now. ;)

You have about six weeks to go.Lol! I'm trying to decide on building another small coop or intergrating the rescues with some of mine other birds that are close in age. So I can get some chicks out or my utility room. One is spoken for of this group. One is a younger rescue that was to young to stay with the others the gut asked me to take. He saw me making money selling eggs thought he'd do the same then he realized that it's work so he gave them to me. Can't believe he hadn't noticed how deformed it's legs are.i need to cull her just waiting on the guinea she is attached to the crippled hen till I get her a mate. Pam

Oh yah, don't forget you have a couple of guineas to get from me for your lone one! Let me know when you want a mate - or two (two would be better)! - it'll take me a night or two to catch them. They spent last night in the coop because of the rain but usually they roost on top of the pen or in the pecan tree - way too high for me to net them.

I sat on my hands & refused to bid on the Rhodebars; why bother when I can make my own?

Will check on the 4-H breeds; but she wants something that lays colored eggs regardless so definitely is interested in your Legbars ( if 1/2 my flock weren't EE's & Ams I would be, too but I'm full up on colored eggs when the heathens ever decide to lay again, that is)! If I get a good hatch on my next set of RIRs I'll offer her a pair for the kids. It's nice to know young people who are willing to take an interest for their kids.

If it was me, i would, and be sure to pull your vent plugs if you have them, let them eggs get all the oxygen you can, may have to watch the humidity until you go to lockdown, i wouldn't let it get above 30 % if i could help it, i just finishe dry hatch and mine ran 40-42 % until lockdown, had a decent hatch going till i let the humidity get up to 80 + before i caught, i think that drowned most of the ones that didn't hatch, look through this tthread, i think every body should https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101
Topdog how did your humidity get too high? I've been running my cabinet at 42% and was thinking of keep it there for incubating if I can.

Have you read that it is suggested not to raise humidity until the first external pip. This is a good read and it makes sense.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/577310/a-guide-to-humidity-weighing-and-lockdown

Also, in this article she doesn't increase the humidity until the first pip. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chookschicks-incubation-cheat-sheet

I'm sure that you probably already have some of these pages on facebook bookmarked.  But I figured I would post links in case.

These are all Louisiana groups.  If you don't find what you are looking for you could post what you are looking for and hopefully you will have some luck.

I'm in a few of those groups myself. Bobby

I only want one mate or I'll have the problem your trying to avoid right? I guess the sooner the better I'm just not looking forward to the ride thats a ways from here. Pam

Your right the others will harm the silkies. I don't know about the polish maybe someone who has them can let you know. Are you looking for pets, egg layers, or heratige breeds that are for meat and eggs? Pam

I am looking for pets/egg layers. The hens I have now already lay a good amount of eggs so the egg laying trait is not as important. I have no plans on eating any of them.

No rush - I'm fixing to send a couple of them to freezer camp, since I noticed this morning they are harassing the hens -- only the Cuckoo Marans - I wonder if they think that since they're speckled, they are the same species? either way, I'll keep the female & 2 males. Maybe we can meet mid-way at some point. I'm in no hurry.
