"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Oh, no, Prim! I am so sorry to hear you lost Selena. I will be setting a few Basque, white Bresse and Olandsk Dwarf eggs to check fertility. I may even have a couple of BLRWs to add. You are welcome to any fluffy butt that hatches!
Sorry you didn't have a better hatch. Shipped eggs are such a gamble; I have had a range of success from zero to 100% with shipped eggs. It depends on so many factors that are out of control of the shipper (as long as they are packed well). I have Sebastopol eggs in the incubator now. They were shipped from a friend in Florida. I know her Sebbie eggs are fertile and she does an amazing job of packing, but it appears that only 1 of the eggs is growing. The postal service can be really hard on them.
I know the feeling. I recently lost my beautiful Sebbie girl to a predator and cried my eyes out. Still so sad over her loss. RIP Ruffie.

So sad for everyone's losses. I sure hope her eggs are fertile!
Yum!!! Homemade yogurt! Do let us know how it turns out.
My stepfather really wants to raise pheasants to eat, but they are such pretty birds! I must read your article!

The yogurt turned out great! We opened it the next morning (everything was still nice and warm, so I guess I did a great job with setup and insulating) and it smelled exactly like yogurt! Success! The kids enjoy it with a spoonful of homemade jam. And this morning I finished off the first quart by putting some into the Pumpkin Spice muffins :)

I LOVE the Sebastopol geese, they are gorgeous. Someday.....

TGIF La-yers! It's supposed to warm up into the 70s this weekend!!!

I have one of the young RIRs who has had me stumped as to sex from the get-go. I kept saying pullet, no rooster, pullet? rooster? thought I had 3 girls & 3 boys for the longest time but this morning I was feeding them & honestly, now that one looks like a pullet again! -- it started putting on comb & wattles before the other girls did, but now I definitely can see a difference in the two I KNOW for sure are boys - and they are starting to develop saddle feathers, but this one is not & does not appear to have the much larger, redder wattles -- although they are still larger than the three I know for sure are girls. Guess I'll have to wait & see if it crows or lays an egg.

Mardi Gras starting to roll! I passed nine floats on the highway on my way to work this morning. Pineville is having their first ever parade tonight & at the end, will cross over the river into Alexandria. Fun times!

Planning on candling my RIR eggs this weekend - they are due to hatch on the 15th.

We will be getting a new addition to our family -- Zipper is a young male tri-color Cocker Spaniel bred by my good friend Kelly who lives in Calgary. Kelly will be flying with him from Canada to spend Easter weekend with us. As some of you may remember, we have retired Ch. Winnie & Mal; they will be 11 in May so I figured it was time to get a younger one in the house. Although Zipper would easily show to his Ch. here in the states, I don't do conformation showing, but I might try him out in Obedience & Rally or Agility.

Was trying to catch Jenny laying (hoping for a third egg today!

) and I caught these two pullets looking VERY curious.

Neither have ever laid. So maybe soon!

Edit: this is her egg. It looks like it's losing pigment? Maybe because it's her first egg in a while? Or she's older? I have no idea.

Some chickens lay eggs with those tiny white spots that they add at the end of the coloring process. Sometimes they are tiny like that, some times they are larger and in a more irregular pattern. Just part of the beauty of their artwork. If you are ever worried about your birds calcium intake you can give them crushed oyster shell, crushed eggshells or poultry vitamins. We do put out the oyster shell and give vitamins now and then on a regular basis. If nothing else it makes me feel like I'm doing a good job as Chicken Mom ;) I've also read of lots of people using Red Cell in their poultry water constantly. They say it is equivalent to the poultry vitamins that I use.

Oh Terri how fun! New puppies are the best and that one sure is adorable!

Every year I can not wait until Mardi Gras season is over over over. LOL! Guess I'm still showing my Midwest roots.

it doesn't look like it lost pigment just looks like its more porous of an egg...if you were to candle it you would see it quite clear....heres a great web page to check out...if it were losing pigment it wouldn't look porous like that it would look more shaded with some spots being lighter...more then likely cause by not enough calcium in the feed....oaster shells can help with this

hatching 101 shows a great image of a candled porous egg....

also another good web page

some of my eggs have this look to them....so ill be adding oaster shells to their diet...in a separate container....I like the idea of gravity fed pvc for this type next to one filled with grit

What a Sweetie!!! No I figured it out. Not much going only 8 eggs and it looks like most are clear. You get what you pay for, right? I'll see if any are viable later. They are white so easy to see.

I have an oyster feeder for them, but sometimes it gets clogged. I'll go check. And I'll candle it. Meanwhile, check out this sweet little egg! Fourth layer! :celebrate

Not sure if it was a pullet, or SS. Is the SS pullet. :D I was totally stalking the box all morning to see who was laying, and after three eggs I stopped watching. This was a surprise!!

sometimes their little bodies just cant keep up even if there is plenty of everything in their diet..they are egg producing machines...I don't expect every egg to be perfect....so im sure its common
