Well, I went to give a treat to the chickens and while the cage was open my injured Leghorn jumped out. Well I had been parading her around the other chickens like you said to so I decided to see what happened. Well, you were right. My cockerel ran after her right away and tried to mate with her. I pushed him off and he tried a few more times before I gave up and picked him up. She walked around the other chickens and none of them pecked at her. So I put her back in her little pen and not sure what to do now. Let her heal and put her back with them? If it happens again do I need to get rid of that roo?
I guess we have a new grasshopper Camping. Take it as a compliment Mire it's a term of indearment.
Your roo is going to mate her it's his job. Some are rougher then others. Wait till her cut is scabed over before leaving her with the other flock mates. Is your roo the same breed or size as your hens? If he has just reached sexual maturity he is just learning. Grabbing her head is normal but you don't want blood drawn. Chickens are attracked to red and will peck each other to death.I would let her heal then reintroduse her if the roo grabs the comb stop them. See how he mates with the others. If he has mated with her he will with the other hens too. So you will know soon enough if he will draw blood everytime. If he does you can get rid of him for another or put him in quarenteen. Let him out to mate every 21 days then seprate again. If it was me and he doesn't get less aggerssive during mating I'd send him to frezzer camp and replace him but it's your call. Pam
. She was wanting to do it herself. Which was admirable. But after she started on the first wattle I took over immediately. We had talked it over plenty and we had agreed that if it wasn't going well that I would have to take over. She hesitated to much and I didn't want to stress the bird. He got vitamins and scrambled eggs after and is now inside being very active. If anyone needed help now it seems that it would be me. Hahaha!!!!!!
Thank you and everyone for your advice. I am very much a newbie and it is definitely appreciated!
thanks anyway civic!
