"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hello everyone! New BYC member here just getting my foot in the door of this thread as a fellow Louisiana chicken keeper so I'll just let you guys know a few things about myself. I got started on my first flock in April so I'm very novice. I live in a residential area with a limit of 3 pullets (so I've heard) but almost everyone in town who keeps chickens has well over the limit and no one cares as long as they are well kept-so... I've got 10! My next door neighbor has 9 and our neighbor behind us has 17 and have had theirs for years. Lol! My children and I loved the idea of exciting egg colors and that determined our breed selection. I've got 2 EE, 1 OE, 1 Faverolle, 1 FBCM, 1 lavender Ameraucana, 1 light brahma, 2 Cochin bantams-1 smooth and 1 frizzle (we have them simply bc they are too cute not to). My flock is young but I cannot wait to get my 1st eggs and am honestly enjoying chicken keeping 10x more than I expected I would & I KNEW I would love it! That's about it guys. I really look forward to getting to know some of y'all, but for now y'all get those chickens ready for Cindy and stay safe yourselves!

@Country3883

I hope last night was not bad. It didn't rain too much in Lafayette. What will you do if one is a rooster? I always wondered what I would do as well. Lafayette doesn't seem to say NO to roosters, but I don't need lots of baby chicks running all over. :)

A pic of my girls I think ones is a rooster and there new set up

I really like the setup! Do you have nesting boxes on the other side or are you going without any boxes?

My first chicken started laying a couple days ago and mine free range the back yard and she keeps laying them randomly in the yard. I had them locked in their coop/run yesterday till 5:30pm when I got home from work and she didnt lay till nearly 7:30 when I went inside for 30 minutes! Walked out at 8 to lock their cage up and saw an egg lying in the middle of my yard! They will lay those things anywhere.

Welcome! I am super jealous. I'm in Baton Rouge and I am itching for more than the 3 we are allowed. I am not really good at breaking the rules but in a year or two it may be too hard not to get a few more. haha.

Welcome to the board!

When they get older yes I'll go with nesting boxs

I can't image only 3... I don't have any yet, but 3! I would have to petition.

I feel like for me, 7-8 would be ideal. Any more than that and it's just waaay too many eggs, even if I'd give them away. I love their interactions and having a few more would shake it up a little bit. Plus I only have the two types. I'd love to add some variety to my flock. Some Amaricanas or EEs. A Buff Orphington to me is just one of the most classic looks and I'd love one.

My fiance got scared when I started looking at property outside the city limits so I could get more. haha
