Welcome and having chickens is so much fun! Are you wanting really good egg layers, chickens that lay a variety of colored eggs, or a mixture of all?New member from Prairieville….I know only the bare basics about chickens but am determined to research and learn. I would like to have a diverse colorful, quirky, personable flock of 8.
I have two trained Dobermans, 3 house cats and my wonderful children are all off to college so I now have time to do what I would like to do….get some chickens.

-not free range all day but plan to let them out daily for couple of hours after work. Then however long on my days off Sat-Mon.
-# chickens: max of 8?
-kind of chickens: really wanted y’all’s thoughts on this. I am half and half on being egg producers and just enjoying the beautiful chicken move around my yard acting funny and quirky. I could sit on a porch and watch horses and cows all day long and never move. Weird? yes, but I love to watch animals. My 3 houses over neighbor has 10 Rhode Island Reds.
Looking to learn as much as I can before taking the plunge.
Thank y’all in advance.
Really a mixture…Are you wanting really good egg layers, chickens that lay a variety of colored eggs, or a mixture of all?
For pretty eggs, I'd say either Americaunas or Easter eggers that will lay either blue, pink, or blue green eggs, black copper marans for chocolate colored ones, cream legbars for olive green, and Faverolles for pinkish colored eggs. Of course there are way more breeds than this for colored eggs but these are probably peoples top picks. For chickens that are cute, beautiful, and quirky, polish, silkies, mille fleurs, brahmas, and cochins. Really great layers are Rhode Island reds, Golden comets, leghorns, Isa Brown, and Green Queens. Good luck with your adventures!Really a mixture…
I am sure with 6-8 hens there will be some eggs which would be nice but I am equally interested in the colorful fun and quirkiness of watching them in the yard.
I am really new to chickens but understand the discipline, research, dedication and education needed to start this- With zero knowledge, I raised and trained two Dobermans with the help of a great online forum. So I am in for the challenge and looking forward to it.
