It was hot today here Twiley. I can see how it happened. I put my hens that were on the wire down to the ground today and they retreated to the shade immediately. All of the birds were panting. I pulled the Sebright chicks and silkie chicks out of my shop and put them on the wire. It was 104 in the shop and they would have died had there not been a fan. The other chickens didn't mess with the new gang too badly. Luckily I have a big oak tree in the backyard that provides shade. Their favorite refuge was underneath my 4 wheeler though. I put the sprinkler on and put some garden soil in a low spot and they all immediatly took a mud bath. I also provided several waterers in shady spots. I have to work tomorrow so I hope I did a good enough job. Im sorry to hear about your sons chickens.

I am so sorry to hear that. I know if it was me I would have been devastated. I'm the type that gets really emotionally attached to my animals, not matter what kind they are. Here's hoping the other 4 can make it through this awful heat.

My chickens were panting today too and they have plenty of shade. I sprayed the chickens and their coops with the water hose. They actually seemed pleased. They immediately started scratching in the dirt -- similar to what Mike said about his chickens playing in the mud.

I think running fans is a good idea.

On my sons hens, I have several laying hens that I was going to butcher to make room for my chickens that I am growing out now. So, I'll send some of them to my son instead of killing them off. So, actually these hens will get a reprieve from "death row"

Don't put too much water in the kiddie pool. Chickens have..., well, like uh... "bird brains" and they may drown.

But, yes, some like water to cool off. I had a white Leghorn hen that would sit in their water dish when it was hot to cool off. I hated that because the water would get poopy.

Okay, thanks, I have some shallower plastic pans that they can sit in if they will . There is no possible way I can hide them in the house ,I don't think my wife would take a fancy to that idea at all .

Missi, I'm going into panic attack mode (as always) due to the heat. I am racking my brain on what to do. The only thing that I have done so far is placed A LOT of waterers in the shade out of the sun. I have my stalls that I place waterers in, so the water does not get got. Anywhere there is a covered area, then there are lots of waterers. I have my large kiddie pools under the trees so everyone can still drink from the pools and the ducks and geese can bath. The turkeys stand in the pools to cool off their feet. I thought about box fans as well and know that you mentioned it, I think I will pick some up.

If anyone else has any ideas as well, I am all ears.

I put a big shop fan on mine for two days now , am going to get a couple of box fans and put one overhead and put others around where they are hanging out , mine have natural shade but that is not helping at all .

A couple of misters are a good idea too . Thanks

Those fans are sounding better and better. My biggest problem is keeping their water cool during the day. I have waterers throughout the chicken yard and have placed many waterers under the shade trees and under the raised coops and in the stalls but some of them continue to go to the community feeder area and eat and want to drink, so I have to leave those waterers there. I have tried freezing water in water bottles and coke bottles and placing them in the water in the morning before I leave for work but that only keeps it cool for a few hours. The sun immediately melts the frozen bottles and the water is still hot when I return home from work.

I have summoned my "builder" and have asked him to make me "shade huts" that can be placed over the waterers to prevent the sun from beaming down on the water. I don't know if that will help but I have to give it a try. I got this idea from the Baton Rouge Zoo. I went there a few years and scoped out their set up. They had these little bamboo huts that were placed in many of the animals areas. They animals were able to go under the bamboo hut and get out of the shade. So, I figured that it would work for the waterers.

I think what helps me is because I have those chicken stalls and raised coops that the chickens go into to get out of the heat. They also go to the chicken house and chill out in there during the day. I can probably put a fan in there to keep the girls cool.

The watering system is my biggest problem.
