Missi, I'm going into panic attack mode (as always) due to the heat. I am racking my brain on what to do. The only thing that I have done so far is placed A LOT of waterers in the shade out of the sun. I have my stalls that I place waterers in, so the water does not get got. Anywhere there is a covered area, then there are lots of waterers. I have my large kiddie pools under the trees so everyone can still drink from the pools and the ducks and geese can bath. The turkeys stand in the pools to cool off their feet. I thought about box fans as well and know that you mentioned it, I think I will pick some up.
If anyone else has any ideas as well, I am all ears.
I put a big shop fan on mine for two days now , am going to get a couple of box fans and put one overhead and put others around where they are hanging out , mine have natural shade but that is not helping at all .
A couple of misters are a good idea too . Thanks
Those fans are sounding better and better. My biggest problem is keeping their water cool during the day. I have waterers throughout the chicken yard and have placed many waterers under the shade trees and under the raised coops and in the stalls but some of them continue to go to the community feeder area and eat and want to drink, so I have to leave those waterers there. I have tried freezing water in water bottles and coke bottles and placing them in the water in the morning before I leave for work but that only keeps it cool for a few hours. The sun immediately melts the frozen bottles and the water is still hot when I return home from work.
I have summoned my "builder" and have asked him to make me
"shade huts" that can be placed over the waterers to prevent the sun from beaming down on the water. I don't know if that will help but I have to give it a try. I got this idea from the Baton Rouge Zoo. I went there a few years and scoped out their set up. They had these little bamboo huts that were placed in many of the animals areas. They animals were able to go under the bamboo hut and get out of the shade. So, I figured that it would work for the waterers.
I think what helps me is because I have those chicken stalls and raised coops that the chickens go into to get out of the heat. They also go to the chicken house and chill out in there during the day. I can probably put a fan in there to keep the girls cool.
The watering system is my biggest problem.
