I will be making a trip to Alex at the end of the month. I can let you know when I make more definite plans. Ask me around June 27th when I plan to go.

Cool , thanks a lot !

Save me a 6 hr drive round trip . I may get one of those rose comb BLRwyans just for the heck of it , don't really matter about it's comb .

Just to clarify -- I'm keeping the rose comb BLRWs. But, I have three pullets that are single comb. If you want them I will give you a good deal on them. They should be laying soon.

My mistake , yes the single comb , are they still eye candy and since I am a newbie , what is a rose comb vs a single ? The comb really doesn't matter .

WOW! 10 pages in one day! I guess I'm gonna have to check in more often than just once a day. LOL!

I was actually headed to bed and thought "Wait!! I haven't checked BYC today!!!" I guess I just needed my fix of chicken info today.

Anyway, I will make all of my comments tomorrow. Have been at the ball park all evening and am just too tired.

Y'all have a good night!!

I guess the run areas should be covered for shade and protection from rain? I'm planning my chickencoops now -- please share your experience with the run areas.

Well, this is the first year I covered it, I let them free range dawn till dusk last summer so I never worried about it before. Since my coop is just 3 sided and the roof hangs over it gave them about 8x16 of shade. I just didn't feel that it was enough shade for them. And they were panting so bad. I think this is going to really help out. I won't keep the tarp on once it gets cooler outside. Now with that being said, when I build my new coop & runs I will make sure I give them lots of shade but will still leave the majority of the run uncovered! Mine love to scratch around in the wet dirt!!

I also was reading some posts not to long ago about vining plants on the run. One person said they have grapes on their's and said it works great for shade and the chickens love to jump up to get grapes plus she said there's still plenty on the outside to harvest. I LOVED the idea and think I might have to try it.

Good luck with your building plans! What kinds of ideas are you throwing around?? Did you see the 4 section coop & run I posted a few days ago?? Since you have so many breeds something like that would work great also!!

I love the idea of the vines over the run. I've always wanted to try to grow kiwi plants. That might be a good place for them. Grapes would be good too. And, yes, I did see your sectioned coop and that is very much what I'm thinking of building. In fact, I'm thinking of one for my geese also so that I can separate them during breeding season. I love my geese but it makes me crazy that some people don't separate the colored pairs or saddlebacks for breeding and just let them run altogether leaving the mating selections up to the geese. It leaves the buyer guessing for some time trying to figure out what color gosling they've purchased. For example: my lavendar, or blue, or gray goslings. This is nature's way but it's not good if you're wanting to breed buffs, lavendars, or saddlebacks because these colors and patterns require both parents to have the recessive gene in order to get offspring in these colors or patterns. I want to know and plan ahead of time for what I want my offspring to be.

They are pretty little chickens. I will post pictures tomorrow. Will post a picture of the babies too. I apologize for not posting pictures yet. I've been distracted with my granddaughter here.

If I had extras, we could slip one or two in with the chickens. You think she'd notice?

I completly understand and agree with you. I'd want to know what I was getting or be able to say "hey I want this color, etc." And your right that would work really good for that!

Hold on! There's still hope for my Sebastopol eggs. I candled them again tonight and out of the four eggs, two were no longer viable, however, in the other two eggs there was life.

They are due to hatch July 2 or thereabout.

My shipment of Muscovies and a Sebastopol gosling should arrive in the morning. I've been tracking the package and it is on it's way from Lafayette. It left Lafayette at 11:39 p.m. so I hope to get it first thing in the morning.
