"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

What kind of veggies and fruits do you feed your geese? Nola has gone through all my green beans. I'm heading out to the store and wondered what I should get for her. I'm getting the baby vitamins for sure.

Yes, I completely understand! There have been a couple times I almost made my hubby go pick up some silkies for me near NO. I was so excited when I went to pick up chicken feed and they had silkies! I am not sure what buckeye chicks are. I will have to look them up.

Well, today was my first ever processing day. Yes in the rain! And yes I did it even though my 2 helpers backed out. Lol, it was cool though, even though I got bit by one, after i did the first 2 with a hatchet, he decided to run for it, and had to shoot him, and ruined the meat (the bullet went down & tore his insides up). But it was a learning experience. It also proved that I am capable of doing it. I didn't take pics because it was raining, and even though it took about 30 minutes a bird, I was trying to hurry. Oh yea, and my homemade plucker was a huge fail, lol.

Anyways, this morning:

I feed my geese anything they're willing to eat in the way of fruits and veggies. They absolutely LOVE lettuce. A few of mine LOVE watermelon. I tried strawberries once but they didn't seem very interested. They also like grapes. Sometimes, in the wintertime since cabbage is so cheap I'll throw in some cabbages for them to nibble on. They're not crazy about cabbage but will nibble on it out of boredom. A head of cabbage will last them several days and then eventually disappears. You may want to do a little research on recommendations for feeding. I know there are a few things that you should not give them but I don't know what they are right off.

Congrats on the processing. Sounds like you had your hands full since you were doing it alone. How did the hatchet work? How did you hold their heads down? I'm afraid of missing their heads and then the poor birds will have to suffer for a few more seconds or minutes while I re-position them. I don't want to torture the poor birds.
