Ya'll are talking about a wormer Valbezan and Safeguard . I use Wazine for both pigeons and chickens . It's time to re-worm , can you get these at a Feed supply store ? Most things like this I can cross use , but for the pigeons I have to recalculate doses . Smaller bird . Do these kill gapeworm and tapeworms ? I have ivomec that is formulated and all I have to do is put two drops in my pigeons . Got some Vitamins and Electrolytes at Tractor Supply and I had to lower the mixture to 3/4 to 1tsp per gallon of water for my pigeons . I know we need to alternate wormers so they don't get a resistance . I alternate from Novalsan to Oxine when I dis-infect lofts and coops for the same reason .

Missi , how does one know if they get a pip ? Are these in an incubator ? You can hear it ? I have never seen this done , just curious .

Yeah, wasn't that a lovely game? I swear, those boys acted like they never even saw a football before!

We were out until dark helping a young man who came to cut up our fallen pecan trees for firewood. Now maybe one of these days they'll lift the burn ban & we can get the rest of the little limbs & stuff taken care of.

A pip is when the chick first makes the tiny little hole through the eggshell so it can breathe - it's just fascinating to watch!! very exciting -- they will pip & then those eggs start squeaking & rocking & the action begins!!! I've had eggs that started "calling" even before they pipped -- I talk to them through the air holes in the incubator & they rock the egg & go wheep! wheep! back at me. Good luck to you Missi-- hope you have a great hatch!

Julie looking forward to your recycling saga! you have such an innovative mind -- you really should be writing a book about all of this. You could definitely have your own TV show! And then we could all say "we knew you way back when you were just a La-yer, lol"!

Lot of outside work do to today & time to start getting the greenhouse ready to move plants inside for the winter.

Here is my story.............Took me a while to get all of my tips together for this post.

Missi & Gracie, I didn't mention in my post on 8/31/2011 https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=160883&p=844 when I posted my pics that the feed storage building was pallets, so I will explain.

This is where I got the wood to build my feed storage building. As a few of us have discussed on the thread on where to get pallets, etc., I got the materials (lumber) for my feed storage from a local glass company. This glass company receives a lot of things that are shipped in pallets. The glass company also makes pallets to ship things to different places. So, they have to have lumber (pallet wood) to make the pallets. Once the have cut and made all of the pallets that they will make for the week, they have what they call their "junk pile". All left over wood and wood that has been cut is put in that pile by their large green can outside in the back. Once the lumber is placed in the trash can, it's FREE to anyone who wants to take it away. They give the lumber away so freely because they do not want to fill their dumpsters up and they want to make room for more "throw away" materials. The "key" to getting this free stuff is to know what day they make their pallets. Being as though I know the day that they make their pallets and about what time the materials will be piled up on the side of their dumpster, gives me a head start to getting material from anyone else who doesn't. So, on the days that they make their pallets, I swing by their store on the way home and drive to the back of the store to see if any materials are there. If there are any materials, I go home, get my pick up truck and trailer and head back and load the material. I will do this on a weekly basis until I have enough material to complete my jobs. I have a friend that will let me know how much I will need to get. He can pretty much make anything that I think of out of any type of lumber. So, it make take me 8 weeks to get enough lumber to begin my next building project, so I have to wait until I have enough. So, the lumber that was used to build my feed storage was pallet wood lumber that was not needed any more by this glass company. That is how I got it for free.

When I mentioned "Extreme Recycling", this is what I talking about. Being a recycler like I am is time consuming but full of rewards (if you have the time). You have to be motivated to go out and seek things and have the patience to wait for materials or anything else to become available. It's almost like a "hobby" for me. Many people don't believe me when I tell them all of the free stuff that I get. I had a 1st cousin who literally thought that I was telling him a lie when he would come over and see things that people had given to me or things that I picked up, until he started coming with me when I picked up these FREE items. After a few trips and he saw the rewards that I got from "hustling" to get stuff, he was a believer after that. Now I have him on the "Recycle" bandwagon.

As I always mention, Craigslist is my best friend. I'm on Craigslist EVERY DAY. If I see something that someone is giving away free and I can use it, I immediately send them an email. I am usually the first person to contact the poster and I usually get the item. A lot of posters want whatever they are giving away for FREE gone ASAP. So, I tell them that I will pick it up right after work. Many of these people will then keep in contact with me and let me know when they have something that they want to get rid. There is attorney that I have become friends with who was giving away something about 1 1/2 ago. I emailed him and picked up the item. Ever since then he has become one of my egg customers and he sends me an email before posting on Craigslist asking if I want whatever it is he has to give away. If I want it, I will go and get it. If it's not something I want, I tell him to post it.

Other places that I get free lumber from are ANY and ALL constructions sites (new homes being built, schools being remodeled, painters painting building, contractors tearing down buildings). Many of these places will have material (lumber, PVC pipe, metal tin, nails, screws, hinges, etc) that can be recycled. All I do is drive up and ask if they have anything to throw away. Some will have things at that time and others will tell me know that if they have any unused materials, they will call me. I give them my business card and many times, I will get calls telling me when to pick up the unused materials.

Another place that I get FREE stuff is the local Yahoo FREECYCLE groups. Just last week, someone posted that they had landscaping rocks that they were giving away for FREE. I contacted the person and I picked them up that same day after work . The person that was giving away the landscaping rocks was a lady and man who were having their home built and they bought the landscaping rocks to put around their pond. They changed their mind and didn't know what else to do with it and couldn't bring it back to the store because they had opened up all 6 of the bags. The offered it in the group and I was the first person to make contact. So, now I have landscaping rocks to use for my pond (whenever I get it dug). Also, this area is a new subdivision that is being built. This house was the 3rd house in the subdivision. So now I have a new site to visit to see if they have left over materials or I can look through their throw away pile.

I could tell you so many stories about how I got my free stuff. It pretty much boils down to a person having time, patience and resources. Because I'm not married and don't have any kids, I have the necessary time needed to pick up things. And the thing about it is that I do not go out of my way to get these things. I will not travel any distance that will "cost" me to get an item. Most of these items, I can pick up on my way home or may be within 1 - 3 miles from my work. A lot of the time, people will meet me in a neutral area and drop off the item to me.

Missi, I was able to get a rabbit hutch from someone in your area about 1 year ago. I have a best friend that lives in Baton Rouge and she picked it up for me and brought it to me when she came to visit her grandmother in Opelousas. If I see something in the Baton Rouge or Lake Charles area on Craigislist, I will contact my family or friends and ask them to pick it up for me and I get it whenever they come to town or whenever I visit them.

This same place that I got the lumber to build my feed storage has some shipping crates that I spotted on the side of the building last week. They are about 5 feet wide and 4 feet tall. These would make great geese and turkey houses for when they lay eggs and are ready to set on eggs. I have to call the glass company and ask about these shipping crates to see if I can get some.

Our local lumber company has a "discontinued" section. About 2 years ago, I called them to see if they had any FREE things that they wanted to get rid of. I told them what I was looking for (Shingles) and that I wanted to complete my chicken house. He connected me to the supervisor of the department and I let him know what I needed. He told me that he had boxes of shingles that had been sitting in the corner for about a year and that he could give them to me. Ever since then, I will call him from time to time to see if he has anything to give away. Most of the time, a lot these places throw away TONS of materials instead of giving it away.

"Extreme Shopper" - Just a few tips on day to day savings and ways that I shop in order to save money.

I get FREE 5 gallon buckets with lids at Wal Mart from the bakery. These buckets are buckets that contain frosting/icing. All I do is call them and ask them if they have any buckets for the day and ask them to keep the buckets for me. When I get off from work, I pick up my buckets. I refuse to go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pay for 5 gallon buckets. It's not in my budget.

Our local cooking oil food company has empty 55 gallon barrels that they give away. I have a classmate that works there and she contacts me when they have some ready to give away.

I use old rice sacks that the feed stores give away to line my brooders.

I get FREE bread and treats at the bread store for my animals because of the expired dates. The bread store writes it off as "feed".

I get FREE fruits and vegetables from my neighbor who owns his own business in which he sells (fruits and vegetables). All of the bruised fruits and vegetables that he doesn't sell for that day, he drops them off to me.

Friends and co-workers bring me their expired/outdated/bruised fruits and vegetables that are still good to feed my flock.

I check out FREE up-to-date movies at the library. Going to the movies is VERY costly.

Tips for Grocery Shopping
When I go grocery shopping, I always have my eye open for items that have an expiration date of that day's date or within the next day or 2. I will ask for the manager and bring to his attention that the product will expire on that day or the next day and ask for a reduced price on the item. They ALWAYS give me a reduced price. This is what I bought at reduced price a couple of weeks ago and ALL of the products were in good shape and of course still good for consumption.

6 bags of salad @ $0.25 each = $1.50
2 bags of grapes @ $0.25 each = $0.50
1 bag of apples @ $0.50
4 cantaloupe @ $0.25 each = $1.00
1 bag of grapefruit @ $0.25 (I made fresh grapefruit juice this weekend for breakfast and it only cost me $0.25.)
2 gallons of Organic orange juice @ $0.75 each = $1.50
4 bottles of salad dressing @ $0.25 each = $1.00
2 medium size containers of yogurt @ $0.25 each = $0.50

TOTAL PRICE for all of this was $6.75

In addition, in store sale on liquid laundry detergent (29 loads) 45.4 oz - regular price $4.00 was on sale for $0.97. I stocked up. So keep an eye on expiration dates that are not way over the "use by" date. Many of these items are still good. The stores just want them off the shelves.

I sign up for my local store's emailed sales paper, so I get that week's sales paper emailed to me and I can take a look at the items on sale to see if there is anything that I can use. This way, I don't have to waste gas going to the store to check out the weekly sales. If any items are sold out, you can usually get a "rain check" slip and pick up those sale priced items on the next shopping trip.

Also, check to see if your store has a "Reduced Item" section/aisle specifically designed to have the store's reduced items in one designated location instead of placed on the shelf in each individual section. They have great reduced prices. Our store has packets of seasonigs, marinades, etc for $0.10 - jars of peanut butter for $0.80 - spray cans of insecticides for $0.50 - large cans of juice for $0.25.

Purchasing Gas
If you buy gas at Wal Mart, you can buy a Wal Mart gift card and you can get $0.10 off of each gallon of gas when you pay with a gift card. I can save $78.00 a year using a Wal Mart gift card to pay for my gas. Sure it takes an extra 5 minutes to go inside the store and get a gift card but for that extra savings at the end of the year, I'm getting a Wal Mart gift card to pay for my gas.

Do you look on the back of or at the bottom of your grocery store receipts? Well you should. Do you know that some of your receipts will have coupons on the back of the receipt that you can use on your next store visit? Some also have (if you read the fine print) savings on your next visit (10% off) if you bring in a receipt from your last gas fill up that is $25.00 or more. So, you keep your gas receipt and bring it back to the grocery store, show them your store receipt and receive 10% off of your total purchase.

Do you know that fast food receipts have surveys for free food on the back? I don't spend a lot of money at fast food places (Usually the dollar menu) but when I do, I complete their survey and I get free food the next time I visit that place. When you sign up at some of their websites, you can sign up to get a text for free food. The fast food place will send out a text for free food every now and then and all you do is show them that text message and get your free food.

I use a lot of coupons and my friends, family and co-workers know this so, they will get coupons for me for items that they know I use and I use the coupons when I go shopping.

I have a couple of co-workers who are addicted to shopping online at Overstock.com and who enjoy changing out the color scheme in the bathrooms and bedrooms, just about every 6 months, so when they change their designs and colors in the rooms in their house, they always bring me what they have. A co-worker will order the wrong color online at Overstock.com and not able to send it back, so they bring it to work and ask me if I want it because they can't do anything with. Soooooooo, the cheap person that I am, I take it.

Miscellaneous Savings
I once brought my truck to Midas to have them put on new brakes. Well, while there, they pointed out that some belts needed to be changed. They changed the belts but there was a problem. They did something wrong and there was squealing every time I would start my truck. I kept having to bring it back. So the last time I brought it back and they couldn't fix it, I demanded that they pay the bill for me to take it to the dealership that I brought it from AND compensate me for my time and inconvenience. They paid the cost for the dealership to take care of the problem and I got 3 FREE oil changes. Although my friend said that he wouldn't trust them to change my oil being as though they messed up the belts, I still was able to get 3 FREE oil changes and I have used them.

As far as "complimentary" savings, I always try my best to get compensated for my time and trouble at any business that has provided poor customer service to me. I feel that these large corporations take in enough money from consumers that they should have well trained staff to make sure that I am able to have a "hassle free or problem free" experience at their place of business.

Those are just a few of my tips that I use daily.

If anyone wants to come over to the BYC thread where we talk about being frugal, here is the link. A lot of good cost savings ideas over there.

ETA: Forgot to add that I am also signed up to several yahoo groups that send out daily emails about freebies. You can sign up for anything from coupons to free food and other samples. Just a few weeks ago I cooked curry chicken. Well, I had signed up for a free FULL SIZE jar of curry from this company that was giving them out. You can get free toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, trash bags, and any other household item that you can think of, to include free t-shirts, hats, socks, undies, etc. Depending on how many items you accumulate, you may not have to purchase that item in the store for months (toothpaste, shampoo, etc.).

Finally got the feed storage building finished AND painted. Here are a few pics. I finally found the color paint (Barn Yard Red) that I wanted at Wal Mart but they only had 2 cans left and they haven't had any more since then. This is the color that all of the coops and stalls will be.

Yes, I get both Valbezen and Wazine at the feed store (TSC). I think Valbezen kills everything.
