"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I sell my day olds for $8. And (although I've never sold pullets), I think I'd charge $25. Are you saying that's too much? I just know they cost me a lot to get started and they eat a lot.

I never knew the cost. I was surprised to see that they cost that much.

I paid $8 for each of my BCM chicks and that's what I charge for my babies. I don't breed on a large scale of anything, though. And other (crosses and whatnot), I'll sell for $3.

I received a Freeze Warning text on my phone from the weather channel. I live in Opelousas. I have open air raised coops and I didn't do anything different tonight. I think they should be ok.

Maybe others will chime in and offer more info.

I guess things are good and I won't worry, then. Thanks for the input!

Chick update-When I got home, I had one more BCM chick, and another that my husband had helped, which later died

. There was another pipping and looked shrink wrapped so we went on and helped it, too (I know, I know). It's drying off, but it's breathing and peeping, so hopefully it will make it. So, that would bring my grand total to 5 live chicks, which is pitiful, but all things considered with the temp drops, I'll take it. I think I had 18 eggs in there, and I never even candled them to check for fertility, so I'm not sure how many actually died and how many just weren't even fertile. This is my last clutch until the spring. I can't handle the stress!!

I'm having the same luck as you...or maybe even a little worse. I locked down early Sunday morning with 21 eggs. I'm sure I had movement in a least 19 of them when they went in. So 6 Hatched, a 7th one died while peeping and never made it out the shell and all the other eggs are now DOA.

I had 52 eggs when I started this batch and ended up tossing 31 eggs before I got to lock-down. Now those kind of numbers really stink....lol! But what your going to do...set more eggs I guess!!

We have battened the hatches here -- meaning, other than stapling visqueen over the open air part of my coop a couple weeks ago, haven't done anything different -- hey, the chickens have natural insulation & none of them appear stressed - I know the summer heat stresses them a LOT more than this little cold snap so not worried here. Never had any problems in the past five-six years including when we had those snows a few years ago -- they loved it!

Hope everybody is doing well -- tomorrow is my "Friday" so will be able to catch up after that! the new job is going well altho very busy but that makes the time go by faster.

My peacock D'artagnan -- a Buford Bronze split pied -- has sprouted a white eye feather! -- I am so thrilled! will try & get a pic of it but it just looks like a cotton swab on the end of a long feather right now.

Have a good night all! got to get to bed now -- up early tomorrow to break ice on the waterers & get to work!

Yeah they should be fine don't close off those vents at the top as you will trap moisture inside the coop and actually make the conditions worse for them. This is when you have more of a chance for frostbite to occur and also they need fresh air as to not get to breathing too much ammonia in from their waste. My chickens are EXPOSED the only time I cover them up say 95 % is when the wind is going to be blowing that's the killer there. They can handle temps way down close to the single digits with their feathery insulation but the wind is an altogether different deal.

All my coops are open in the front. The only thing I do is cover the roosting area with a tarp to keep the wind off them. My 5 week olds do have a heat lamp in the brooder and my week olds are in an unheated shed with heat lamps in them. The temps here are saying low is 28 here so that means it'll be about 25 here!!

Hope everyone stays warm!!

Yes, indeed. It's going to be hard, but I'm going to force myself to wait until the spring to do more. I mean, I've got that whole human baby thing going on.

Plus, it took me about 3 weeks to sell the last clutch and it started making me nervous as I'm running out of chicken room

I would have had to build a seperate pen for them, as mixing never goes well around here. My plan if they didn't sell was to sell them in the spring as laying hens, but someone bought them all last Sunday, so it worked out. So, now I just have to figure out what to do with these 5 babies (if they all make it...that one I helped last night doesn't look to awesome). It's not really worth messing with trying to sell 5 of them. More to love.
