"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey fellow La chicken people.

I am in the need of 1 or 2 young Rhode Island Red roosters, say 5 or 6 months old, hatchery quality is good enough.

Doing a home hobby breeding experiment. Going to put them over my Barred Rock pullets. I am attempting to start a small scale sexlink breeding program. I will also be getting some Rhode Island White Pullets. Going to try for red sexlinks and black sexlinks. My initial plan was to raise a sustainable population of Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock, and Rhode Island Whites.

I am in SE La, 15 or so miles south of Baton Rouge. Don't have anything to swap right now, so I will gladly pay green cash, $5-$10 for a good cockeral. Or work something out. I'll travel out towards Hammond east, Lafayette west, Clinton north, and Laplace/Norco/Destrehan south.

And just so's you know. My chicken are not free ranged because of predator problems, but they are given green grasses, veggies and other chickens stuff. The cockerals will be kept secure in a protect run with weather tight shelter.

Respond via PM.

Howdy All,

Well I was able to buy some new Tools... Told my wife that I needed a new miter saw and a new table saw to build the new coops..

Got both.. Sooooo I'm starting on the project. What I plan on doing is using pallets of the same size as the floors and walls. I got some tin from Lowes that was cheep cheep. ... I have plenty of welded wire and chicken wire.

Each pen will have a coop the size of a pallet, about 4' tall. I will use some 4x4 cuts and have it about 2' off of the ground so that it gives the birds more "yard" to play in. Each pen will have a 3 x 10 foot run.

My pens will have the following:

3 Black Australorp hens, one HUGE BA rooster
3 Coronation Sussex hens, 1 white x coronation split hen, and 1 Coronation Sussex Roo.. he's a big boy as well.
2 EE Hens and 1 EE Rooster ( I will look for 1 or 2 more EE hens/pullets)
3 Buff Orphingtons (Looking for 1 Buff Orphington Roo)
2 Barred Rock Hens, 1 Barred Rock Roo ( Need 2 more Barred Rock hens)
I will make 1 more pen that will house 3 RIR Hens and 1 RIR Roo.. once they are found.

I will use my current coop as a grow out coop for any extra chickens that doesn't have a direct breeding mate. I might also use a part of it for my Seramas.

Anyone know any one that might have some Pygmy Goats? I'm looking for a couple.

Will post pics soon.

Joe

BEWARE:
For all of you left lane drivers, please be aware that state troopers are on the look out for those that drive in the left lane for a long time. They are now giving out tickets to left lane drivers. So, once you have passed that slow driver in the right lane, please get back over in the right lane or else you will get a ticket.

Never tried it -- my only "experiment" was I crossed my one & only black Andulasian hen on my wheaton roo & her offspring lays a very light pale blue & very pretty egg! -- if I were into creating crossbreeds I would definitely pursue this, as I know my Andulasian lays consistenstly in the hottest of temps & now her daughter has the light blue tint to her eggs - I like the combination -- plus, they are smaller hens who lay eggs on the medium to large size & forage well.

Joe your plans sound great!

Julie thanks for the warning on the highways! ]

OK off to bed for me; been a long brain-draining day & more to come tomorrow.

Have a good one everybody!!!

Yes, you need a game breeder permit to own them, and a federal permit to buy/sell/trade them.

Mandarins are the asian cousin and require no permit since they are not on the Federal Migratory Bird Act
