Mzstre, that's a beautiful roo! I never heard of that breed before. Where'd you get them?

I realized yesterday that D'art - my Buford Bronze peacock, is developing more & more white eyes & patches on his back (saw him shake out his feathers & spread his wings) - his mother was a silver pied & I do believe he is developing into a Buford Bronze white-eyed -- can't wait to see how he developes next year! Mr Burt had that one male who has continued to turn whiter each year - the Loudens own him now - it's been fascinating to watch his color pattern evolve!

Hey there and mornin' to al ya'll La-yers and BYCers too.

Anybody been out "muskiedime" picking yet. I have and they are good and sweet. This is the first ones I have seen in a coons age. I guess the rains and stuff all came at the right time this year. Its hard to find Muscadines that the critter(squirrels, coons possums. crows and jaybirds haven't already gotten to first though, as they know exactly when they are perfectly ripe it seems. I gathered a bunch off the ground and brought to the chickens for a snack, they weren't too interested in them though. I had a notion to get out Granny's ol' glass five gallon water bottle, its the one she used to make her "brandied fruit for baking in" (wink-wink)

yeah okay, right? Now being from a predominantly Baptist family(no alcohol allowed) I always thought this too was another good ploy to have a sneaky way to have something to take a little nip(in the closet) from ever so often LOL. Anway I decided better against making any Muscadine wine as I still remember(well parts of it here and there) somewhat of my last episode of me and a half gallon of muscadine wine. It didn't end up so well. LOL

Terri- I first saw this breed on the Greenfire website, but I found another breeder who imported them here on BYC. I ordered hatching eggs from him… the Basques are the first chicks that I hatched. They're supposed to be very productive and lay extra large eggs. The hatching eggs I received were very nice. The birds are originally from Spain and are acclimated to heat. They should do very well here.

I have 2 or 3 (the others are lighter in color) of these boys to re-home or my husband is going to put them in the freezer. Yikes! I'd hate to eat such pretty, mild-mannered boys.

Terri - you really should post a picture of D'art. I would love to see him. He sounds gorgeous!

Jeff - my Paw Paw has a good crop of muscadines this year. They always make a batch of wine, but I prefer the jelly. Yum!!!

Hoping for some advice here...I posted this on another forum too.

We went fishing a few weeks ago and kept a smaller bream to feed to our birds. I threw the fish into the oven for a bit to kill any parasites and then tossed it whole to the chickens. I was amazed. When I walked out of the run, they were all snatching bits off the fish, and I remembered thinking that they were going to pick the bones clean. Ha! I never did find the bones. I thought maybe our dog took what was left of the carcass. 2nd time - I kept 4 fish and fed them to the flock. I stayed in the run to see what happened. They tore them apart and ate the entire fish! Now I'm wondering if this is ok. Are the fish bones going to injure my birds? Is it safe for me to give them the whole fish?

I would like to see an answer for this too,.. we give the flock crawfish shells and heads and sometimes shrimp too and I'm always a little afraid to do it but they never seem harmed and they eat it up! But those fish bones are scary????

I've never fed mine fish because I heard it could make the eggs taste "off" -- but I would think it would take an awful lot of fish to affect the taste.

As for the bones; egrets, herons, hawks - they all eat fish & they don't debone them first.
Egrets & herons & hawks are birds. Chickens are birds.

mzstre your Basques are beautiful! I love their coloring. And the extra lg eggs are a nice bonus too.
I do have pics of the peacocks in my photo album here. I'll try & get some this weekend when we move the young ones to the grow out pen. The big boys are looking sort of shabby right now as they are moulting.

Jeff I make muscadine jelly every year - love it! -- told Jim he should try making muscadine wine this year - I've had it before & it was pretty good!

We have given fish carcasses to ours without any problems

I wonder how they don't get those bones stuck in their crop,.. it's pretty amazing,..

whats going one my friends working nights for the next to days so i will be on late 5pm to 5am. got 6 RIR's about a couple of weeks from laying. they just started to make a lot of noise in the coop when i am around it, more than usual. not sure if that is a sign but i do know the red on some of their faces are getting pretty red think that is a sign too. got the nest box ready with shavings in it but no one is going in it right now. would appreciate any help i can get on what to do to get ready and what to look for from my chickens...thanks and GOD bless
