(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My husband and I bought our first 16 chicks March 2019. He built our chicken coop from searching the web for ideas of what would work best for us and our family/space.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 15 hens that are almost a year old and we just bought 10 chicks the first of this month (February). So, we will have 25 all together once the chicks are old enough to introduce into the coop.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Our year old hens are black sexed links, golden comets, and a welsummer. The chicks are dark brahmas, olive eggers, rhode island red, blue-laced wyandottes, and a couple more golden comets.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Love the ability of our children to be hands on with raising, taking care of, and being comfortable with knowing where eggs come from. They've helped handle them as well as feed and water them. Love being able to let them free range in our yard and learning the different personalities/temperaments of the different breeds.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Full time mom, wife, soon to be grandparents, church, foster parents, cross-stitch, reading.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband is a full time pastor. We've been married 30 years. We have 5 child. 30 year old married son who's expecting first baby, 28 year old unmarried son, twin adopted 6 year olds who were 2 when we were able to adopt them, and a 2 year old foster son we pray will also become permanently a part of our family. No other pets currently. Love bird watching therefore I have several bird feeders in the backyard.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Was referred to BYC from a friend/family member on facebook. Just joined this year (2020). I am looking forward to connecting with others more experienced on the journey of raising chickens.
