Rhabdomyolysis from statins: What's the risk? How do you know if you have rhabdomyolysis from statin use? Can statins cause other serious side effects?
Answer
from Thomas Behrenbeck, M.D.
At high doses, statin medications can impair the production of certain proteins involved in muscle metabolism and function. Uncommonly, this can result in muscle pain and tenderness — a condition known as statin myopathy. If you notice moderate muscle aching, stop taking your statin medication and contact your doctor. Muscle aching usually goes away within a couple of weeks after stopping the statin drug.

In severe cases, statins may cause muscle cells to break down. This rare but potentially life-threatening side effect is known as rhabdomyolysis. The most common signs and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:

■Severe muscle aching throughout the entire body
■Muscle weakness
■Dark or cola-colored urine
The higher the dose of statins, the higher the risk of rhabdomyolysis. The risk also increases if certain drugs — including cyclosporine and gemfibrozil (Lopid) — are taken in combination with statins.

If you have signs and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis, stop taking your statin medication immediately and seek medical treatment right away. If necessary, your doctor may take steps to help prevent kidney damage and other complications.

Statins have only shown to be useful for one type of person...

Men under 55 who have already had one heart attack.

For anyone else the same effects (lower inflammation, lower A1C, lower VLDL, etc...) can be easily achieved by reducing carbohydrates and normalizing vitamin D levels.

For women, statins are USELESS.

Here is one of my favorite sites. It was created by a NASA flight surgeon who got put on statins by HIS doctor. The statins caused him all kinds of problems including amnesia.

My husband and I have been doing low carb since January. He has gone from 200 to 185 and I went from 136 to 115 so far. We love egg fritatas with green onions, spinach, mushrooms and cheese. We have also found that Costco has a low carb wrap that has a total of 8 net carbs and another 8 carbs of fiber - its a little dry but there's so much you can do with it. They also have a chocolate protein shake that only has 2 net carbs and another 3 carbs of fiber. I love these, I can skip a whole meal after drinking one. Also, Trader Joe's sprouted bread only has 4 carbs a slice. It's sooo yummy! We have it with our sunny-side ups in the morning and its great for egg salad sandwiches as well - no guilt.

Also, my favorite way to have a grilled breast of chicken lately is covered with home-made guacamole and a little salsa or sour cream. Lots of fiber there too!

Two of my favorite recipes are for a mock potato salad made with cauliflower and mock mashed potatoes. I made them tonight and DH couldnt get over how much they tasted like the real thing.Last night I made an Pork stew with Italian vegetables I used radishes in it instead of potatoes, my grandkids did not even know that they were eating radishes. With so many low carb recipes out there I am finding it so easy to follow this diet.

Mock potato salad
1 medium head of cauliflower broken up
1/4 cup mayonaise
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 paks sugar substitute
1/2 tsp dried mustard
3 green onions chopped
2 tbsp chopped green pepper
salt and pepper to taste

cook cauliflower in boiling salted water 10 minutes. drain and rinse under cold water
In a mixing bowl mix mayonaise, lemon juice, sugar sub., mustard
Add cauliflower green onions and pepper mix
salt and pepper to taste
chill 30 minutes
net carbs 2.5 per serving (makes 6 servings.
I add some celery seeds to mine but that is just the way we have always made potato salad.
To use radishes in dishes
peel and cut or use whole in soups, stews or as a side dish
boil until tender.
You can also use turnip the same way to make french fries or potato wedges (soak turnip in milk to take bitter taste out of them.
I also have a recipe for twice baked potatoes using cauliflower if anyone wants it. Its delicious

Faux tatoes.. Use Cauliflower instead and whip with butter and cream... after they are cooked of course....OH SOOOOO GOOOD.

I've got some huge heads of cauliflower ready to harvest out in my garden. Great idea.

My problem.... Carbs seek me out and find me.
