LP Smartside or HardiePlank

The cement board siding on our house was not installed properly. Anyway, it wasn't installed as Hardie says to install theirs. Ours may also have been defective. Ours has a different brand than Hardie and one contractor said the kind on our house was discontinued because of so many problems. I don't know if they had so many problems because of the material or because too much of it wasn't installed properly - like maybe they didn't give good installation directions or do as well at getting people to follow the directions.

We will replace it this spring with either HardiePlank or LP Smartside.

Is anyone willing to give feedback or opinions about either one or both?

I'm not familiar with ether of the siding you posted,, but have a question??
Is Vinyl siding not a possible choice?

I like vinyl but it isn't a good choice here.

I think I like cement board better but both siding companies we've had out recommend smartside. I don't know why yet. I have appointments with each of them next week. I'll certainly ask but it helps to learn what I can first. Web searches haven't been very helpful... either inconclusive or not clearly independent opinions.
