My Blue Sapphire hen has this lump/mass below her earlobe. She just started laying eggs last week. It had crusty blood all over it that I already cleaned up. Now it is still bleeding a little with some fluid coming out. It looks like it was attached to her earlobe at first and then she scratched it off. She appears to be acting fine and is still laying as of this morning. Her other earlobe is fine. The lump is kind of squishy and feels like the rest of her ear. It’s partially detached from her earlobe but only just a little. Are lumps and bumps like this common? Is it cancerous? I would like some advice on what to do and how to get rid of it. I love my little Lilah and will do anything to help her. Thanks in advance!!

It may have been a cyst or peck wound, or from scratching. I would apply some disinfectant (Betadine, chlorhexidene) or plain Neosporin on it.

Will this lump go take care of itself? I will use some Neosporin on her scratch when she wakes up tomorrow.

Now that I think about it, my BO did peck at what I thought was her wattles a few days ago (I think she was jealous she didn’t have them) but I was far away so she could have pecked at her ear. Would that cause this lump?

I checked on it today and it hasn’t gotten worse. I did notice that the part of the lump that looked like it had been scratched and a little detached is trying to grow back onto her ear.
