Yes Mam! It does. Thank you so much!My chickens free range out here in the sticks. I put the normal ant poison on the fire ant mounds. The chickens have never been harmed by it. Does that help you?

Wow! Ms. Kari you have a huge flock going on! Majorly! I know just where Steens is. I worked in Columbus for 10 years at the Baptist hospital. I was the Oncology Administrator for about 6 years over the Cancer Center and the Center in Starkville as the office when it first opened. I loved working for them. It was an hours drive every morning and afternoon but it was worth it for me. Well you will be set to deal with any shortages of food due to the pandemic for sure. The only oroblemHi y'all! I live outside of Columbus, MS, in the Steens community. Very quiet countryside.
My plan was always to have chickens, pigs and goats, but with the pandemic, I rushed the plan forward and hatched out quail in March. From there, we got 2 pigs and 3 Easter Eggers, 3 Cinnamon Queens and 3 Domineckers.
Then I got a little bit crazy and ordered a Cackle Hatchery mystery box Haha! I've never regretted it. We love watching them. We've since added ducks and guineas. So the total birds we have are:
34 quail
4 Pekin ducks
3 muscovies (one is sickly and I'm raising inside)
5 guineas (in with the muscovies )
2 turkeys
54 assorted chickens
My most favorite spot is sitting with my birds. My male turkey, Seth, follows me everywhere in their run. If I sit down, he sits down beside me. He's a mess!
My domineckers and Cinnamon queens have just started laying and I've been getting quail eggs since Mothers Day.
It's been a joyous adventure with a few losses along the way. I am thoroughly enjoying my flock and can't wait to expand it next spring!

Do you know about Omega Hills Farm in Columbus? They specialize in the rarer breeds. I almost bought some from there but talked myself out of it. Looks like you have your hands full now. That mystery box must have been a big one to get you up to 54 chickens! It’s good to hear from other MS folks. This thread don’t get much action.Hi y'all! Is if you have a problem is if you have problem finding food for your flock. I have run into problems finding the starter grower feed in Tupelo. I live in Shannon and it has been hard to locate it at the feed store’s and TSC sometimes. They will have some brands like off ones or medicated or all flock but I don’t really want those for my nine laying hens yet. So I have to shop around at like Scruggs Farm and Ranch. I order a lot from Chewy and Amazon to help keep my Scratch and Peck in stock but I am planning on the use of Nutrena pellets when they are all grown up. I wish you the best with your amazing flock down in Steens and I hope all goes really well for you especially with your little quail. I think that is amazing about your gobbler being so social. I pray he always stays that way for you!
Take care and please feel free to stay in touch any time!
Pam
I have heard of them, but they are quite pricey! CH mystery box guarantees at least 40 birds. The ad says 40 to 50. I got 52 Haha. And at 90$ and no shipping fees? I truly couldn't pass that up. And it's been a ton of fun figuring out the breeds. You

Just as far as Columbus is basically but on the Alternate 45 as opposed to the New 45 ByPass HWY. They are both super easy to get to for me because the access and exchange to both highways are a rock throws from my house. The Town Incorporated of Shannon part with all the businesses like the townhall and bank, post office etc., is all right on the road I live on. I live right on the Main Street next to the police station. Lee County doesn’t have Co-op in operation any more but I am glad that Monroe county does and Lowndes, and the county that West Point is in has left me for a moment but I know they have a good one also like you said. Times are a changing. Lee County supervisors need to get it back together. See they bought that big Agricultural Center for the Miss State Univ Vet School to have right there in Verona across from Tecumseh Products. That was for the Fair, rodeo, all the ag shows, anything to raise money for research at the school etc., for 4h but they closed the extension office and Co-op in Lee County when they did that.Hey!
Yes I realized quickly that chicken math was going to be a problem for me. Haha
I rarely buy any feed at TSC. I can and do buy it all at my local co op. This stupid pandemic has made it difficult to find alot of stuff. I'll ask my neighbor/mentor if he knows any reliable places up that way. I'm not sure how far West Point is from you, but they have a pretty nicely stocked Co Op. Might be worth a call anyways.
That's really sad that Lee Co. did that. I rarely go up that way. I go to Columbus, West Point (Clay Co.) and occasionally Starkville. West Point is normally just for drs. appointments though although I like their Walmart better than the one in Columbus haha.Just as far as Columbus is basically but on the Alternate 45 as opposed to the New 45 ByPass HWY. I consulted my husband on the topic of the coop here in Lee County and he straightened me out on the history of it. Now it’s been over thirty years since it went out so please forgive my history lessen being a little rusty on it. The Co-Op was privately owned but was on property owned by Lee County which in essence is owned by the supervisors. Well it got rat infested and people also started shacking up out there also so it had to be sold. So my husband informed me I was right about the ownership of all of the property just not of the contents. Now the Agricultural Center was bought and set up also by the supervisors to host all these events that I mentioned but it flopped he said because they could not come to an agreement to sell beer at the events. They would not have an all 100% agreement to allow it to be sold so it wasn’t so it flopped and they never did make a good go of making any money off of any events profits that were held there. The rodeos were not heavily sold out and the fairs were not heavily sold out in ticket sales etc and they couldn’t make a good go of it ticket sales wise and it flopped. But I just wanted to correct what I had written incorrectly to you not knowing that I had told you wrong about it and the Lee County Co-op. I sure do wish we had a good Co-op though so we had a good teaching resource to go to as well. We are missing out here on that. That's really sad that Lee Co. did that. I rarely go up that way. There is another farm and garden place in east Columbus. Used to be called Browns but they sold out and now it's called Four seasons. I havent really checked them out, but I've heard they are trying to have more product.
I do buy my garden scratch for my birds at TSC. I throw that out in the mornings along with grit and they love it. They have access to feed, (7 way grain and now layer pellet mixed) in their coops. I fill bowls with oyster shell and grit for free choice.
I'm just learning as I go, but this seems to be working well for me.
No worries on the history, bottom line is still the same.I consulted my husband on the topic of the coop here in Lee County and he straightened me out on the history of it.
