Mabel's Broody Adventure ENDS

Beginning of Day 6

Incubator is at 99.5 but the humidity is down to 24%, the water trough was full in the beginning....do I need to check it? Is 24% ok?

is a good thread for you

I generally keep my humidity between 35 and 40 but I'm not really clear on which incubator you have.

To up the humidity you can do a few things

I roll up an older tshirt, dampen with warm water, heat a few seconds in microwave until warm - not HOT

then rubber band it and put it in the incubator.... You can also moisten smaller pieces....If using a turner, small moistened sponges help on it to, just don't impair the turning.

I've also run a warm air humidifier in front of an incubator and it ups the humidity nicely.

In the rainy south, we don't have much of a problem.

Hope this was helpful.

Blessings on you and your hatch.

thanks bargain for the tips! The bator I have is Rob's (nifty) it's pictured on page 9 of this thread Hova-bator

Mabel walked a bit more this afternoon, but wing is still droopy, going to the chicken vet tomorrow am.

I'll put the eggs she's been on in the incubator....correct coaches?

Holy smokes!! Not sure how I missed your post yesterday. I think the bator is your best bet if she needs to go to the vet. I'd probably be more inclined to wait a few more days, but the chickies around here are something between pets and livestock and while I've been known to cheat a bit, the funds for chicken vets aren't readily available.

Don't forget to update, I'm on dh's puter until mine gets fixed so I can't get the email updates, but I'll do a better job of checking in. How is she doing this morning?

hey kittymomma, I was worrying nobody was following anymore...getting tired of this crazy adventure

But happy to see you!

Mabel is same, no water no food, sitting on eggs, however DH said when he went out to garage this am one egg was pushed out and cold....sigh...he pushed it under her again. SHe does seem to have a problem getting them under her sometimes as her legs are not strong, but it could be it was also a dud and she was telling us. I might candle them before putting in bator.

I know going to vet, right crazy, but she means the world to me and I feel like she's working so hard I owe it to her and my peace of mind to forgo a few lattes for her vet visit.

I don't think it's crazy, If I had the option I'd do it with mine too. I'd keep trying the scrambled eggs, if she won't go for those I've had good luck with canned cat food. The cat food can be high in salt so you don't want to overdue it, but it can work wonders as a jump start. Let us know how the vet goes.

Just got back from the vet, with swollen eyes and sniffles. Teardrops falling on my computer as I'm writing. We had to put Mabel to sleep. Meraks disease. Vet thinks the stress of either the lice she had 3 weeks ago or going broody set it off.

I lost my dear sweet girl, my favorite that followed me everywhere, came when I called her, ate like a pig, I'm so so sad

We have all the eggs now in the incubator and I think I'll start a new thread because without Mabel's help I really don't know how to raise chicks. I'll do the research.

Only promising thing is that my vet, who was wanting some orpingtons is going to take two of the white orp chicks we hatch in exchange for her coming over to vaccinate them at one day old.

What should new thread be called? Now we are incubating.... or Incubator here we come... (I'm so sad I just can't think)

We are at day 7 now. Should I candle them?
