Mad and Mad What Would YOU Ask For Any Laying Age Bird?

I get 15 to 25 bucks for POL hens my LF Dark Cornish I get 50 minimum. Feed is now about .28 per pound.

honestly, it just depends on your area and the time of year. Spring, I can get laying hens for $2-3 because everyone is buying new chicks; I can get 2yr old hens for free when someone is clearing out their flock to make space for new chicks. Summer, it's harder to find anyone selling. Fall?? Again, free birds falling out of the sky because of all the people who bought chicks and didn't make plans to keep them through the winter.

From reading dozens of threads on this here and in other places it seems to be strongly dependent on your location, the time of year, and to a lesser extent the type of birds you offer.

For a healthy, well-bred, five month old pullet here in my part of Florida I wouldn't sell her for less than ten dollars and would ask more in the spring when more folks are in the mood. Right now is the low point of the year so ten bucks would be about what I could get. March, April, May I might get closer to twenty. This is for "name brand" birds such as commercial White Leghorns and ISA Browns. For unknown mixed breeds then maybe a couple dollars less.

I never sell a laying or POL bird for less than $20 unless it's a friend or a 4Her. It's too expensive to raise them up to that age, and if folks don't want to pay it, fine! Go find another!

I'd have called the guy back and told him there was a mistake. Bad mistake!

Where were you all when I wanted POL pullets this spring?

I would have had no hesitation paying $25+ each, for healthy birds.

I got 0 response from BYC and Craigslist, so I ended up buying chicks at the feedstore.

Imp- Course you would've needed to be close.

I would never pay more than $10 for a laying hen. Rooster's are usually $2 or less (usually free with hen purchase) Standard Breeds like RIR, BR, BSL, etc are usually $4-$6 and your fancier ones are usually in the $8-$10 range (EE, Wyandottes, Delwares, etc)

I sell my pullets age 20 weeks for $4 each. Chicks range from $0.25 to $1.75 usually.


When I purchased my Muscovey's I paid $40 for 9 hens and 1 drake all around a year old. I sell the ducklings for $1.50 each.

I'm not selling birds as a subsidy- this is a business for me, and I watch my pennies. I'd definitely understand if it was just getting rid of animals that were the product of broodies and mostly forage-fed...but that's not my situation, and so I charge accordingly. That being said, my birds are tame and well-kept, not just yard birds.

There are varying levels of care and cost, so there are varying levels of sales price, as well. Nothing is ever really 'one-size-fits-all.'

I think you have posted that you have Sicilian buttercups. I would roadtripped to Kansas for that.

I did get one at the feedstore.

I think others are correct that the cost of chickens depends on the local economy, and what the market will bear.
