Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

CatWater... keep the eggs at about 50 degrees, pointy end down. Put something under one end of the carton (that's about an inch high) and at least two times a day switch the carton end that's elevated.

Hurley... LOVE the catheter idea - pure genius!

Wolftracks... I'm sure normal people will understand that stuff happens and you had no control over it. You're doing the right thing though by making it right. Hang in there.

Mahonri... what does Leader for the National Chain of BYC Restaurant Eggs mean?

It just started snowing here about an hour ago... already have a dusting everywhere.

Have had an entire week of a bad day at work... TGIF.

Here's an updated list of the contests that are going to be running.
Ok, I've got big shoes to fill (thanks Kathy)... but I'm going to do my absolute best to keep track of the contests and prizes. If I'm missing anything or you'd like to clarify your prize/contest/etc please let me know via posting here or PM.

Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC Easter Hatch Contests:

1. Best Hatch Rate Contest:
For this contest during this hatch, participants will be hatching a minimum of 20 eggs. Post how many you will have cooking by Monday 04 April 2011 and then don't go back and edit your post where you tell us how many eggs you start with. When the hatch is over, you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many you actually got... it would be nice if we could count them.
In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.
Prize: 6 month GFM sponsored by BYC/Nifty!

2. Cutest Chick Picture:
Pic will need to be taken and posted by or before 11:59PM EST on April 26th... We'll be asking folks in the hatch as well as some moderators to help me judge if they are willing. There will be 1st and 2nd place awards given
Prizes: First and second place receive 6 month GFM sponsored by BYC/Nifty!

3. Guess for # of chicks Mahonri hatches:
Guesses need to be made before 11:59:59PM EST on April 6th. The guesses will be posted on post 1 somewhere beside the hatch participant's name.
In order to help break a tie, you'll also need to guess the breeds of the first three chicks out. If you want to know what breeds are in Mahonri's bator read the thread!
Guesses need to be submitted via LareePQG's spreadsheet located at:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/vie...RlZi05NWMxLTQ2MjgtOGM5MS1hYTAyZTQxN2QyYjY&ifq

Morning Mahonri!

Looking forwards to see if there will be enough people in my area to sell some eggs. I know there are other BYC'ers from UT on but I don't know if they have seen the thread yet. Would be nice to offset a little of the cost although that is not why I have my chickens.

SCG I have the plush Lubbies chick as a prize for my contest. I will forgive your CRS for you terrible week at work.

It must not have been a good week for nurses. My brother works in the emergency room in a hospital in Phoenix and he has been having a lu-lu of a week too. Hope today goes better for you.

Wolfie, if it wasn't for bad luck you would have no luck at all. Deep breaths, I am sure your buyer will understand. If I was in their shoes I would. When I am having a particularly bad day I try really hard to think of something in my life that I am greatful for to put things in perspective. Hang in there girl, today has got to be a better day for you!

I got CC's eggs yesterday. She does such a wonderful job of packing. She sent 24 eggs and it took me over an hour to carefully unwrap them all. I did have one cracked egg so tomorrow I will be setting the 23. i really can't understand how one of them got cracked. The box was not smooshed and each egg was wrapped individually and then wrapped again. Who knows?

I know it wasn't the way they were packaged for sure! Sooo excited to get those eggs!

some folks use wax paper to hold them in place... and it seems to have worked.. I just place mine on top and none have broken yet.
The ones close to the humidity paper do OK too.

If I stack them like that, will they hit the top and does that matter?

If I have to, I am sticking the ducks in my bra and sleeping sitting up. I am not going waste the ameraucana eggs. They were too expensive.

Debi I can offer my services or at least try to help you fit them all in there. Feel free to PM me if you need to and I will try my best to help. I say the easiest starting point is to get the duck eggs all set in a row and then start filling in with the other eggs. Using wads of wax paper to fill in the space left in that row from the size difference and then the next rows put eggs in a staggered type row where you are putting two rows together between the rails. I will go do some fridge eggs and take a pic.

she was on all day when i was outside and she got off the nest she pooped and it looked to be the size of a tennis ball did i do something wrong by cleaning her box because it was very nasty and i want to make sure she had a nice clean place to hatch her eggs. before she got off the box she made an alarming sound like something was trying to kill her. she will not let the rooster touch her at all

This reminds me of the broody we had last fall. I brought her into the back room of the house in a watermelon box. One of the evenings my DH rushes to me and says "I think the dog might be really sick." (Our 110 pound dog) He thought the dog had an accident in the back room of the house and something was very wrong because of the white in the poop. Nope it was the bantam hen flew out of the box and then went back in. The size of it fooled my DH.

I also have a broody standard Cochin. She is an awesome incubator, twice last spring she had a 100% hatch. I will have to take the chicks away as soon as they hatch. She always squishes them.

Ok Debi, this is one example I can show you. The less rails you use in the Brinsea the more eggs you can put. I just grabbed these out of the fridge real quick to show you. I put some of my huge double yolkers in there and some of various sizes to give you an idea. I only used 1 rail. If you can stager them and not use as many rails and instead use wadded wax paper to fill in holes you can do this. Here is the pic.
There are 31 eggs in there and that is not even with any stacking. If you need more help please ask me because I will help you make it work.
