Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Thnak you!!!!

PS - another silkie hatched. I have TWO now!!!!

Ok Debi, this is one example I can show you. The less rails you use in the Brinsea the more eggs you can put. I just grabbed these out of the fridge real quick to show you. I put some of my huge double yolkers in there and some of various sizes to give you an idea. I only used 1 rail. If you can stager them and not use as many rails and instead use wadded wax paper to fill in holes you can do this. Here is the pic.
There are 31 eggs in there and that is not even with any stacking. If you need more help please ask me because I will help you make it work.

I never considered not using the rails. Doh!

Not only do you not have to use the rails, but if you get bantam eggs you can fill in a lot of spaces that are wasted by that paper!

Does the heat not cause the wax paper to leave a residue on the eggs? Why not use parchement paper?

OMG OMG OMG!!!! Ok... I have ONE forced air Hovabator that I bought in December that I use as the incubator and ONE still air Hovabator that a friend of mine gave me that I have added a computer fan to that I am using as a hatcher... The top and bottom of the "hatcher" are in pretty rough shape and do not hold temps/humidity as well as my new one so that is why I only use it as a hatcher.... Now, I am pretty good at playing the incubator tetris game but have only gone up to about 81 eggs at the most.... This time around, I think I am in trouble though...

My goal was to ONLY hatch out my EE's and some lav orps that I had ordered.. Well, I didn't have any more cartons and ran out of room in the fridge to put the mix eggs so I started keeping them to incubate too... My friend dropped off the Lav eggs I ordered yesterday and then one of the locals that has been buying the chicks I hatched out stopped by unexpectedly with 3 DONZEN MORE mix eggs!!!! I still have eggs in the coop from yesterday that I forgot to grab last night PLUS whatever I get today and tomorrow... NOT including those in the coop, I counted 106 EGGS!!!!!!

I will HAVE to use BOTH incubators as hatchers!!! UGH!!!!!! Guess i will be in the tetris contest too!!!

Good Morning Everyone! The weather here was beautiful yesterday and is proving to be again today. Maybe my Polish will get to laying a bit more consistantly with the nice weather. But I already have over 30 eggs to set tomorrow. that might be the most I have ever set at one time.

Sorry yes I do use parchement paper instead of wax paper, but I don't think it gets hot enough to make the wax come off of wax paper if that is all you have. Oh and if you had bantam eggs just think of all the eggs you could fit in there. Then of course there are the edges to stack if you needed. Love it!! 24 egg maximum my foot!

You can fit 36 d'Uccle eggs in there at one time, no rails, and they are stable for the turner.

A few less if you mix some silkie eggs, around 32-24 depending on how many silkie eggs....

I haven't stacked any yet....

Isn't that just crazy! Mahonri and The Warden got theirs yesterday. Arizona and California. You are the closest to me and it takes longer to get to you! I can ship west in one day. East and North is always longer. So weird how that works.

Well, anyway, I am glad you got the eggs!

Thanks for sending them Kathy; a really great packaging job.
The sorting facilities here in the central U.S. are set up really weird; the eggs I sent to Alaska took the same amount of time as those coming to me from Iowa, and its due to way our midwest sorting facilities are set up. The eggs from IA traveled 800 miles and through 3 facilities to get 100 miles from where they were sent.

I find that the closer someone is, the longer it takes- the distance is better because most of the trip is on a plane. I have had customers in Alaska get eggs in less than 18 hours if they're near an airport...mine is only 40 mins away, so if I take the eggs to the truck at 5:30, they go straight to the hub, on the plane, and are wherever the plane touches down in hours. If the destination is near their airport hub, it's whizbang! When I send live birds, I use the 6:30 truck, as it goes straight to Express on landing, and some get their birds that next morning.

Now, if I send to Wichita, it's 2 days, at 2 hours away. Go figure.

Probably a really bumpy truck ride the whole time with lots of loading and unloading at that!! Longer distance trips get better hatch rates, as well, as it's usually less time on a truck.
