A bit of an update: Still no Barnevelders from the
eBay seller. I just sent him another message. I looked at all of his feedback, and he's mostly a buyer; he doesn't seem to sell too frequently. So I'm thinking that there may have been a true family crisis. Still, I'd like to know whether I have eggs coming or not, some idea of when they might arrive, or a refund.... Negotiations continue.
I've been thinking of hatching in another incubator and bought the $40 still air from
TSC. Now I'm nervously trying to figure out exactly how I will get it set up correctly. On top of that, I read the Texas A&M incubation/hatching guide recommended by Gypsy07 which emphasizes the importance of hatching temperature... artathart told me my $3 plastic thermometer/hygrometer might melt... Sigh. I broke down and just ordered the
Brinsea thermometer, a water wiggler, and a digital hygrometer. I try to be thrifty, but it is just not in my genes. My father and I probably overspend on everything because we overthink, but that's another story...
Speaking of overthinking, the eggs that I candled and weighed last night had already lost about 8% of their original weight, which is too much too soon. So, I'm trying to figure out how I will raise the humidity. The Texas A&M guide says that eggs which lose water too rapidly will be too viscous and cause difficulties in development and hatching, so I need to adjust. Do you will remember my practice grocery store eggs? I weighed those and figured out that 40% humidity was just right for them to lose water at the correct rate - but those were non-developing eggs! Developing eggs lose water more rapidly..... ah, well. The best laid plans. Anyhow, I have covered most of my central trough with aluminum foil. Now, I have to decide if I want to: (a) remove the egg turner full of eggs, unclip the hardware cloth from the floor, and adjust the foil or (b) add a shot glass of water on the edge of the incubator next to the turner which I will have to open the incubator to fill. Sigh. Any suggestions?
ETA: Oh, look! I am over 100 posts.
Very cool.
