Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

With all the rain we have had her for the last couple of months, I have had quite a few dirty eggs. I wash them under running water somewhere in the 100 degree range and use a kitchen sponge/scratcher.

I read in Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens to use 100 degree water so that it would not pull contaminates to the inside of the egg.

I have run small samples of clean, dirty, washed, fresh, old, and ones that have been in the fridge, they seem to be so tough that nothing affects them.

Here is to 12,000 eggs set for easter. Still not sure how many I can get into my GQF since I already have 219 in there but I have 20 empty spots. I some candling to do so I mays have some more room in there. I would hate to have to use one of the LGs, BUT I WILL IF I HAVE TO.

I may have to start them in the LG and move them to the GQF on the 4th when one tray gets moved for lock down.

Hey I just thought of something. Since I dont use the GQF for lockdown maybe I can put 2 of my LG turners in the bottom of the GQF and that way they can be in the good one from set time.

Happy Hatching Everyone

NO apologies necessary! I'm glad to have provided some news for the Cluckington Times!

(Stand by for a PM requesting my copy!!)

Your eggs went out today- you're getting a few Paints.

Who else ordered eggs from me? I took a whole bunch of boxes to the PO today- I think I took one from almost every coop! That's a bunch of boxes...like 14 or 15...

I talked to the woman at the post office today. I explained that I had two boxes of fragile hatching eggs coming and gave her an index card with my name, where the packages are coming from, and my husband's name and number. She taped it up on a wall in the back and was nice about the whole thing, but I got a little nervous when she asked me if they'd be peeping. I'm guessing that they don't get a lot of hatching eggs though there, but it will probably be fine and I'm hoping for the best.

Worst case scenario, they just get delivered with the regular mail.

My practice grocery store eggs are still undeveloped, which is a good thing. Maintaining humidity is difficult! My ambient humidity is about 50%. I'm aiming for about 40% in the incubator. When I put water into the center trough, it shoots up to about 47% and then falls to 29% overnight.

Sheesh. Now I've covered most of the trough with tin foil and so far it has stayed at about 40%. We'll see what it does overnight. If I can get this bit stabilized, I'd like to practice a lockdown, too. I guess I still have time.

I want to experiment with pedigree baskets and have ordered some pint-sized plastic strawberry baskets. I'm thinking they are about the right size, and I might be able to attach two of them together, open ends facing, to create a little hinged box. Am I crazy? Has anyone ever tried this before? The strawberry baskets probably won't get here until after real incubation has begun, so I won't be able to try this with real eggs, but hardware cloth just seems so... hard.

Another question - am I (as a complete beginner) going to be able to tell EEs from Sussexes and Wellies? They all look pretty chipmunk-y to me, except for the markings on the Wellies' heads, I guess. Think I should separate them as well? Or am I going overboard?????

They'll be great so thankful for your kindness!

OK I just didn't know if they were something anyone would want.

Are you kidding? We're hatchaholics here. As long as it comes out of an egg we'll hatch it... And what you've offered up is fantastic and very generous.

I'd offer up some turkens but most people want to be paid to take them

Those work fine.

I made a bunch of cages out of hardware wire. I haven't found them in my storage, but they were easy to make. Only took two pieces and I cut out and bent up an open box and used plastic tie offs to hole it together and to add the top. I've been trying to convience myself to just make a few more.
