Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Mahonri, candle those Icelandic eggs. Kelly and I did today and she had 42% fertile and I only had 33%. The large eggs for both of us were infertile. You might have lots more room in your incubator if you do that. I'm just sayin'.

Mine broke about two years ago and I've been hand turning ever since. I bought it used for $5.00 at a poultry swap garge sale, so I wasn't surprised when it quit working.

I've found that not having a turner has opened me up to a new concept. I once incubated 10 Goose eggs, 30 Coturnix eggs, 7 Duck eggs, 5 Guinea eggs, and 4 Chicken eggs all at the same time in the same bator using this same concept.

There may be a technical name for this type of incubation strategy, but I call it the Holy Crap! What Were You Thinking? Strategy

UPDATE FROM EAST PHOENIX:

Got the turner working..

I think it was binding because I had a goodly number stacked... no more
BECAUSE:

MARY: Icelandic Candle update- 13 of 24 remain. 54% with shipped eggs! Not bad... better than the two of you! Almost all of the large ones were duds. 1 or 2 of the large ones were fertile.

:)

I candled everything I had stacked as well. Mottle java, MFC and silkies all non developing.

So of the 82 originally set I now have 68 eggs. 41 of which were not candled. (in the hovabator)

I have a light on and my roo isn't getting his job done.

Polish with wax looked like it had started to develop and then died.
The extremely blue egg from one of my wheatens that I cracked I waxed and it IS developing! yeah.
The very last egg that I stacked in the brinsea was a blue egg from my coop. It had just barely been laid so I stuck it in while it was warm. It is developing. I named it "Lucky".... wrote it right on the egg!

Post office did a number on a number some of the others. Oh well.

So those who guessed I'd hatch more than 68 are out. I've lowered my expectations. I really hoped I'd get 40, now I think I'll be lucky AND successful if I get 35!

Thanks Mary for having me do a day 4 candle. It was worth it. I have a better idea of where I'm at.

I'm not candling anything in the Brinsea now until day 18. I'll candle the other 41 in the hovabator on day 10.

Well I suppose my original guess of 75 eggs hatching is done for, since there are only 68 eggs left.

You really went over kill on those candled eggs. I've never thrown out any eggs when I candle, I'm always afraid that I've messed up and the eggs are still good.

says that turner has been working all along, I just happen to look in there every 4 hours when it's in the same position. I guess it moves kinda slow, but whatever, its working now, that's all that matters.

I'm still congested, coughing etc... BUT I'm not in severe pain..
Last night I was at an 8/10 I want to go to the ER for demerol
Today I'm a dull 4/10. I'll live.

Glad antibiotics work.

Oh and Kathy... other than a new small incubator, guess what I'm going to buy and put into storage?
You guessed it, another turner.

Glad to hear you're feeling better Mahonri. Those Antibiotics work like a charm, especially for grumpy 8 month olds will ear infections.
