Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I have no idea how many eggs Mahonri brought over.

I just work here.

Lessie: I had to cut new cartons for the Repti-pro...so.... 70? And I am throwing out 2 of mine and 14 of his.

That leaves us with 54? Ish.

OMG ..... just THINK about this ..... YOU could potentially have 54 chickies running around in a few days!

Noooo.....

Mahonri promised he'd come and take his away.

I have a large brooder that is currently being used for the turkey's preferred sleeping perch. I am going to have the boys pull it out of the coop this weekend so I can sterilize it and put it under the porch next to a reliable outlet. I usually keep the peepers in a rubbermaid for the first week anyway. No rush.

I DO need to make sure I buy chick starter. Although I think I prefer the turkey starter. The last batch I had was raised on it and all the roos were crowing at 5 weeks. Can't beat that for culling.

So out of the 3.5 dozen I gave you to hatch...14 were duds. (That polish and leghorn just won't let the roo do his thing anymore) That leaves you with 28 we can hope for.

So from the 18 that were from Patti we still have hope for 13... the post office was awful rough on those eggs.
And from the 24 that were from me we still have hope for 15.... I guess my roo needs to get his rear in gear.

We are not over run by chicks... yet.

Thanks for candling. I'm going to do my 10 day candle from the hovabator on Tuesday sometime.
I imagine I'll loose another 11 out of the 41 in there so that will leave me with approximately 57 eggs in my two bators.

My Tuesday candling will be Illia's, Renee's and the rest of halo's and a few of mine. We'll have to see which postal workers are nicer on packages... those from Washington, Kansas or Florida.

I'm glad I picked up the LED Lenser at Home Depot. I've never had a problem candling my marans eggs with it.

Got a Brinsea SpotCheck thermometer today, so I'm gonna play with it tomorrow. Was going to wait 'til day 10 to candle "for reals" but it's raining here now and for the next week, so I guess I will candle tomorrow, too. I am SO curious about those TJs eggs!

I candled tonight. All of my Ameraucana eggs are good and one Lavendar Orpington. The silkies and the rest of the Orps are all clear. So I am a little dissapointed. DH was REALLY looking forward to the Lav Orpingtons.

Candled again. . . Still, pretty darn sure none of my eggs, even for how dark they are (I'm an expert dark egg candler.

) there was no sign except in ONE Blue Wheaten Marans egg.

Course, I only have 8 eggs total, and only 2 of them are BW Marans eggs.

If that one egg comes out healthy and alive, I'm gonna panic. . . ONE chick? What am I to do with one lonely chick? Sure, it has a mom, but my youngest chicks around will be over 2 months old by the time this one is around. . .

ok i candled tonight of the 35 eggs set , i had to toss

1 black lav split orp - blood ring
2 blrw - blood ring
4 ancona - 3 clear 1 blood ring
2 buff orp - blood ring

I had a problem.. I candled a few this evening and two broke.

Not dropped and broke... I went to pick one up and could see it was cracked. It opened up, hole toward the bottom / pointy end, but didn't leak. Picked up a second, the big end came up with my hand and the small end stayed in the turner. There's still a piece of shell stuck to the plastic. They weren't in the same row, but were in the same spot on two adjacent rows. One was a serama egg, the other a buff orpington... the BO egg made a mess.

There's yolk all over the bottom of the incubator from that second one. Any hints as to what could have caused that? The temp is hovering right about 99.6 and has been pretty consistent, and the humidity has been 40 - 43%. Something wrong in the settings? I'm almost afraid to check the others and have another one break!

Do you think it's necessary to clean it right away? I'm worried about taking it apart and trying to get it back to the right temperature, and how to keep the eggs warm and consistent in the meantime... but I'm just as worried about a half-cooked egg stewing in the bottom. I have a few eggs due to hatch tomorrow and they're in another bator.. is it safe to wait a day or two then pull a switch while I clean this one?
