Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Yes. They arte brooded in a warm brooder the same as a chicken. You can even use the same one. This method is known as dry brooding. There is also wet brooding where the ducklings have access to bathing water, but this method is best done outside or in a shed and not in a basement.

Mason jar waterers work the best for ducks, because they are a bit harder to spill and swim in.

Call ducks and other small ducks aren't nearly as messy as the large ducks.

Ms.FuzzyButts :

G'night dsqard.....

Ok, I stepped in and helped a little on my pipped one. I chipped away a little fleck of what it had pipped and saw that the membrane was awfully tight around his little shoulder. I peeled back a good bit of the shell.. Enough to get it's head out. I saw a little blood so I put it back in the bator for a bit. I will watch it to see if it tries to get on out on it's own. I did wet the membrane a little so it wont dry out any further, hopefully..

If it hasn't progressed any by 10pm my time.. I may help some more. I just hate to go to bed and leave it like this.. My hatched one needs a friend!!

I cut a small piece of washcloth, made it damp in warm water and then placed it over the membrane I had exposed while putting it in the incubator, letting the blood stop. All mine made it that I unshrinkwrapped, so far. 3 of them got the washcloth treatment, but I had to go in a few hours later and hatch each chick. When I hatched them I first went into the bathroom and turned the shower on hot water and let it get hot and steamy in there. I then did the deed either in the sink with the water running or in the shower. I took the shell off first in small pieces then the membrane and the chicks slid right out. I had a few with nasty navels, left it attached and put them back in the incubator. They detached it about a half hour later. Hope this helps.

Yes in the just like chicks, only they grow faster. Once they are outside i don't think they are any worse than the chickens. I LOVE my runners. Comic relief. But they are messy to brood.

They are messy to brood, however, they grow so fast that next week will we have the 5 week old chicks and one week old ducks together in the brooder. I have found there is less mess with a pressboard floor in the brooder because you can just stick a wet vac in there and suck it all up, lay down more pine shavings and move on. Easy!

Oh I love Cayugas! If I had a place for ducks I would have those.
My SIL wants ducks and I keep trying to talk them into Cayugas.
