Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To Mahonri and everyone that suggested pipping for him.. I couldn't stand the suspense of the small hole I made, so I made it bigger and sure enough, he has pipped the inner membrane.. There is some blood leaking from where I accidentally caught the membrane with my fingernail. But not bleeding profusely really. So I will keep a check to make sure I don't shrinkwrap him. But here is what I have right now.. You can see his beak in the middle of the whole I made near the top of the hole where there is a dark shodowy spot... I keep calling it a he, like I need another roo... But only a boy could be so stubborn.. Girls are fashionably late, yes.. But refusing to hatch is just stubborn!!

*ears perk up* Iowa Blues? I've been searching and searching for Iowa Blues. Only found 2 sources, Ideal (which I'm not thrilled about) and Sandhill Preservation. Have an order placed with them for chicks this spring, 12 or so Iowa Blues and a selection of others for my mixed bag layer group. Can't wait. Love Iowa Blues!

Got pics? If you get eggs to sell, I'd be interested!

A group of us in Iowa got together and ordered from Ideal and Privett in September. I also bought some from a local breeder in Cedar Rapids to broaden the bloodline a bit. Still they all are from the same source - Sandhill originally. I have 5 roos and 10 pullets that are 15 - 19 weeks old. A couple of the older pullets are starting to show pink in thier combs, but most look pretty immature. Still I think I should have some available for the Easter hatch. I've never mailed eggs before, but I'm willing to give it a shot

These pics were taken 6 weeks ago. I have more current ones on my camera, so I'll try to get those uploaded soon.

Thanks for the photos! I've hit many a brick wall trying to gather intel on this breed. I love them and would love to help try to keep them from dying out.

I make periodic trips to Iowa, my folks live over by Carroll/Jefferson/Ft. Dodge area. I go right by Cedar Rapids on the way there. Keep me updated, I could always organize a trip home to let my boys visit their grandparents and "just happen to" get some Iowa Blue eggs in the process!

Good luck with them. Like you, I understand the gene pool is narrow, but I'd like to get as much diversification as I can.

GO IOWA BLUES!!

Thanks for the update yeah he still looks juicy. I'd stick a wet cloth over him with beak out and let him bake a bit longer. How amazing this one has made it this far

The yellow ones are, yes. The black one is supposed to be a BR but I'm suspicious. No spot on top of its head, and it has puffy cheeks. Hmmmmmmmm.

I have 2 TJ about an hour from me. I want to add them in the Easter Hatch. I called 1 store and the guy must thinks I'm a kook. He said they have cage free, jumbo, etc , but never heard of fertile eggs....

I got to thinking that different states would use different vender. ??????

If I get up that way I will go in at look for myself. But I will be in on the Chinese NY hatch and I am going to put in some eggs I saw at Dollar General. They were local farm fresh eggs. Heck....what have I got loose. $1.85.

Yeah...they're all different. I called my 'local' TJ's....over an hour away...and talked to a manager who asked me to hold on while he went to look and see if they have fertile eggs. 20 minutes later I hung up!

I never did go there, but I bought some local farm eggs from the closest grocer. I cracked 2 to see if they were fertile, set 10, locked down 6 and hatched 3.
