Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I had a bad morning so far. Just went out to the coop to let the girls out and my beautiful SLW was dead on the floor. It appears she fell off the roost and hit her head on the edge of the poop board. She was still warm.

Part of this is more than likely my fault for leaving the house lights on all night ... probably just enough light for them to fight up on the roosts.

Sorry for your loss.

Something just woke me up again...

The icelandic that had the big pip hole for over 10 hours that I figured I would be helping out was sitting in the half shell with it's top off. Another Icelandic in one of the few big eggs that was fertile is almost zipped out.

Trying to go back to sleep.

Well looks like most have gone to sleep LOL . I was never able to get the generator started and my 12 volt power converter must have blown a fuse or something . A neighbor got his generator started , and invited me to bring my bator there . My only pip had never progressed since yesterday afternoon , no more were pipping , temp was at 86 ; I went anyway LOL . [ Mahonri calls me an optimist , but I wasn't feeling so much that way , I was thinking that chick probably died before the power even went out . LOL ]

It took about two hours to get the bator up to 90 , inside temps at his place were down to 60 when I got there , but I looked and saw the pip had one more chip sticking up . I just decided to crank the wafer till it ran continueously . When it hit around 93 degrees the chick started zipping , and popped the top when it reached 95 . I was amazed , but even more so when I saw another pip ! When the power came on , I loaded up and shot for home with my bator to help my landlord get his water going .

I tripped coming in the house in the dark , but never went down completely . The eggs were still in the carton but thrown to the sides, the chick still alive , so I plugged the bator in . I looked and saw another egg pipped ! The house temps are still rising [ must be in the teens outside ] and of course I'm still adjusting bator temps as the house warms up . I don't know if the two pips are still alive , or if any of the others will pip later ............... but its an absolute miracle that I even have one , so thank you Lord ! I don't know where the water went when I tripped ; the resevoirs look empty but humidity is holding . I'll be adjusting the bator for quite awhile , and waiting to see if any others survived , but my little chick is fluffed and dried already . I may take a pic in a few minutes . What a way to start 2011 !

I too lost one of my oldest Black Copper hens yesterday, she was egg bound. She was egg bound about 2 mos ago and we pulled her through it, this time after 2 days of doing everything I could I knew I wasn't going to be able to save her this time. It is always hard to lose a chickie! I take it very hard as my birds are part of my family...I know their chickens right, but they own my heart just like my other animals and how can we not get attached to them.
