Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Congrats everyone on the chicks. Wish my hatch had gone better. Your babies are adorable.

Good luck! I hope you have a GREAT hatch!

Thanks! All was going well I woke to 8 babies and could see more pips, so all was right in my world. Then as we were eating dinner the newly hatched chicks started to sound frantic, so I went to check. The were all panting and looked about to expire. I checked the temp. It was 110 on one and over the limit on the others. Then I noticed the light wasn't blinking on the incubator, it's a Brinsea, but was showing solid which means it was heating. I had problems with it on my last batch which was why I couldn't set on time. Moisture during lock down must be getting onto the circuit board and shorting it out. My last hatch had 30 some odd chicks that were dead in the shell, so I can surmise that this happened and cooked them. I really never pay much attention to the temp after it's into lock down. I unplugged it and started helping the pipped ones get a bit better pipped so they weren't boiling in there. I had one that was zipped die, but the rest seem to be pulling through and are already eating and drinking up a storm. I have one 4 day old CornishX that is hobbled that I put in there with them and the little piranha of chickens has shown them the ropes on eating. So far I have 26 live chicks and there are a few more pips. I put the rest of the eggs into my smaller Brinsea that has just went into lock down, so hopefully they will be OK. But then since I don't candle until tomorrow I'm sure there are some duds in there. All 52 were shipped eggs and seem to have been well cared for by the PO. I'm pretty satisfied with my hatch rate so far, but not with my incubator that will be making the trip to it's home town to visit its maker. With it continuing to heat like that it could have started a fire. I'm a bit leery on using it even when it gets repaired.

I had 6 that were not fertile and 21 that has hatched. it looks like one or two more may hatch i see a pip and movement

THe best part about hatching is we can all try again; practice makes perfect !

This was the fourth hatch of my never ending hatch. Tuesday or Wednesday I have 4 Legbars hatching. Saturday (yesterday) I set 7 new Legbars. Monday Dick Horstman is shipping me Heritage RIR and Partridge Rock eggs. On the 16th I will get a dozen of SG Dorking eggs from the Poultry Palace in Washington. I bet I will learn more with each hatch.

I have to thin some out now--I have 45 chicks and chickens here and I live in the city.
