Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Unfortunately, Fred was dead less than 12 hours after the procedure.

BUT.... I've found another vet in north Phoenix that promises a better success rate. So I'll be picking out my best NYD Ameraucana and Icelandic roos for the procedure come summer.

Yes, clump immediately, but mine sit under the ecoglow for 2 days before they come investigate. The sand is perfectly appropriate for the grass- really, they pick at the dirt, more than the grass....and scratch and scratch and scratch at it!

I like Exact and Kaytee, but I think they are essentially similar, as baby parrots' systems are fairly particular.

I only sand VERY dark eggs, such as Marans, Penedescencas, Empordanesas, etc. Marans eggs have a thick color coat and it seems less permeable than the normal shell, but even moreso, less permeable after shipping. Local or home eggs don't have issues.

The shell thickness isn't different, and the Marans must be allowed free-choice oyster shell like any other, as thin shells are more likely to break internally, leading to yolk peritonitis and death

Don't let anyone tell you not to give oyster shell, folks!

I'm off to the farm- running late and I'm SURE the biddies are going to be cursing me...One girl WAILS at the top of her lungs until she's let out...sounds like you're peeling her toes. Such a noise!!

Ah, yes! I can see the tree and the flag. Good to get rid of that silly snowflake since it does not snow in Maine anymore!
Are you working on your onions today?

If it doesn't snow in Maine anymore what's that white stuff in my front yard?

But yes, you're right... we had a very mild winter and it's now mud season. Almost lost a boot in the chicken run yesterday.

My onion seeds haven't arrived in the mail yet! They shipped from Seed Savers Exchange first class on Wednesday. I was hoping to have them by now. Are yours sprouted yet?

Oh, I get plenty of eggs. That's the problem, I have lots of chickens. But hatching my own eggs isn't as fun as hatching mystery eggs sent from all over the US. =)

So true!!! I have a flock of excellent egg layers (Austrlorp, SSH, RIR, BO, BR, EE, etc) and the mystery eggs are VERY fun to hatch. Let me know if you need some to add to the eggs you are already getting!

Well good luck with that. We don't have to worry about it hear but it interests me so I'll try to watch for your posts about it. Good luck

Mahonri, I have found that roos who aren't ever exposed to other roos often crow less, and breeds with more of an antiquity makeup (like South Americans and those containing Junglefowl blood) may not crow at all. When they do, it's a very different sound. I'll record Xavier so you can see what I mean. I have a line that may suit you very well...shall I include some of those in your mix?

YES!

I'm not hard to convince. I did the NYD hatch AND the valentine's hatch so I have a lot of babies running around. :p Good thing there's a livestock auction near me and a few BYC'ers willing to take boys to humanely raise for freezer camp or I'd be on TV already explaining why my house is trashed and there are chickens under my bed.

Don' we all run this risk?
