Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

not sure I can justify squeezing turkeys into the coop. I have a serious banty infestation in the coop right now, I'm worried that PigPen would get squished.
The turkeys I hatch and brood with chickens are good in the coop and don't squish anybody. Turkeys that aren't raised with chickens, not so much.

I want in on hatching turkeys! I use to have them, but had to cull them to MG.

This was one of my Bourbon Red Toms-

That is one good lookin tom!

Well, I made room in my incubator today. I took 5 call eggs which were clears

, 2 clear EE eggs, and 10 of these out of the incubator.

That means I have room to set some chicken eggs along with the turkey eggs I already have in for the hatch. No time to ship, maybe I can find some locally.

Or I might have time to get some quail eggs mailed...maybe I should go check ebay out.

Finally caught up! I've been really busy today and haven't been at home much. The last 3 chicks hatched and as soon as I have the chance I'll take some pics of them.

We went to the feed store today as planned for feed and chicks, but they only had GSLs, which I don't want. Well, long story short, out chicks turned into THIS:

Razadia! A duck?! That is so funny. You got it a friend, right? Ducks are better than GSLs any day!

that Diesel was only out for a stroll in the woods.

Oh, that's great news! A hen that you thought you had lost is found and she brought back 8 little chicks. That's a bright spot in an otherwise dim day.

I knew she had a nest over there. Her mother also has one there, just hasn't brought home anything yet. She hatched chicks out over there last year and this year I guess mother and daughter decided it was condo time. I wasn't able to catch them before and when I realized they stayed away more and more I kind of figured this was why. LOL

I'm keeping the 2 blue ones and the chimpmunk looking one. I swear she had chicks from every roo out there with her. I've never seen that done before but kind of cool. Now to try and get the last chick, so I can get her in with the roo I want her bred too. She's outside my back door in a nesting box with the 8th chick and boy can she give the stink eye!

Still just the 2 chicks from all those eggs. What a waste! I don't know what happened, but between the high temps and low humidity I lost 47 I guess. Chicks and eggs are still in the bator, so maybe with a little miracle some will hatch, but not really expecting any more after all this. I have another hatch the 21st. I hope it goes much better than this. I keep looking at all those FBCM eggs and it about makes me sick. Not to mention my Lav AMs. I don't think there were any SPPRs in there, but there are in the next, so I really have to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Good morning all! Getting close! I am calling the PO in an hour to make sure they don't put my eggs on the truck plus I am getting some local eggs. Both incubators appear stable for now so we should be a go! :)

for those of you who are going to hatch turkey eggs after this hatch-a-long, I have a VERY important tip for all of you!!!!
old.gif
when you set the turkey eggs, a week later you need to set chicken eggs with the turkey eggs!!!!!!! I did this last year and all of my turkey poults that had chicks with them lived!!!!!!!
wee.gif
this year when I set the turkey eggs, I did not do chicken eggs with them and the ones that hatch died!!!!!!!!!!

I only had 3 turkey poults but it was heart breaking to have lost them.

Good morning, hatchers. I got 10 hours of sleep last night and I still feel totally exhausted when I got up. At least it's Friday.

I also have no idea if hatching turkeys is still as good of an idea today as it was yesterday...

MN called. It's only 2:21AM here. I'm going to try and go back to sleep... wondering if I called my PO at 5:30AM if they'll still have my box of eggs so I can drive over and pick them up!
