Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Put me in please.

After a long break [I didn't even follow the NYD thread because I knew I would get hatching fever] I'm ready to set some eggs........................ any eggs.

I moved last Nov/Dec and my birds shut their egg makers off. They are still on strike. but I hope they are laying by then; if not I'll buy some eggs. I'm supposed to pick up a dozen fertile eggs tomorrow and test drive my "new" 'bator.

My old Fridgedaire quit on me, so it's now the Fridgebator.

l've set it up to hold just over 10 dozen eggs, but there's room to set it up for twice that many if I want to get crazy[ier].

Is there a 'how too' thread? *Hint hint* ;) I'm thinking about doing that with the old one here. It still runs but uses massive amounts of power so something is wrong with it and I think it would be better used as a 'bator than a house decoration which is all it's been doing since we got the new one! I was thinking of buying this since I can get it in 240v option but would love to make something myself, I'm just nervous playing with electricity so a ready made option is appealing. Deb, I love that brooder!!! I could use one of those... :D

Refridgerators vary too much for detailed instructions to be useful; but basicly there's a 43 watt halogen bulb in the freezer, where the old circulation fan is rewired and continuously pushes air through a dryer vent hose to the bottom, where another 43 watt halogen bulb is located. Air is pushed down through the vent hose and rises back into the freezer sectiom through vents in the freezer floor/refridgerator ceiling. Both bulbs are plugged into a Reptitemp 500 thermostat. There's a PVC pipe nipple drawing fresh air in from the top, and stale air exits out the bottom. One small, tuna fish can of water is in the freezer to get humidity to 30%, two milk jugs of water in the bottom serve as heat wells. I used two, $1.00 picture frames to put in sealed viewing window, and hung a split curtain with small viewing hole the size of the window cut in it, so not all of the warm air is lost when I open the big door. GQF egg turners sit on the old wire shelves, plugged in to a power strip located inside in the bottom and away from the halogen bulb [which is quite hot when running]. There's also a florescent light bulb plugged in to it for continuous viewing light. The blue cross on top is a night lite now plugged into the Reptitemp so I have an easily seen indicator of when the heat bulbs kick on. Holds temps within three tenths of a degree through the on/off cycles.

I *MAY* participate. I did it last year and still have 22 of the chickens from it, all now laying me nice eggies. =) I'm waiting to see how many chicks I have from the Valentine's day hatch. If not too many, may try the easter hatch as my next effort.. We shall see. =)
