Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Are the no-see-ums still gracing the stunted spruce bog lands up there? At one time the no-see-ums (in some locations) were the stuff legends are made of. And I'll bring it back to chickens by asking about mites. Do they irritate chickens in AK? Or at least your area.
Oh I hope I don't jinx myself... I have not seen any mites here  But the no-see-ums are thriving  I try to avoid the big black clouds, but the Icelandics will jump at them, pretty entertaining stuff ;) I like to watch them hunting the bugs. They are so animated about it.

Muy buenos dias Amigos!

Hey, were' getting closer.

Keep spreading the word to everyone on BYC and elsewhere!

You love them. This is Louis and little Elvis.

This is my entire crew, babies Chica, Loca and Elvis, big boys Louis and Stuart.

One of my big boys, Stuart is a great guardian. He runs everything off the property that isn't supposed to be here. He knows every free range chicken and if we move one back into that area from an extended time away, they get chased until he gets to know them. He chased a Cooper's hawk out of the yard a few weeks ago. The stray cats don't even try coming in anymore. The best thing of all? At night he herds the chicken girls that like to stay out late back into the pop door. It is hilarious. Louis, on the other hand is a total airhead. He is just here for the hugs.

Speaking of emus......What does one do with them?

Do they need another emu for company?

On the other hand... Louis may be the smarter of the two...he is the supervisor, takes all the credit (hugs) and has someone else do all the work.

Deja Vu .............. to several months ago. 10..Yes... 10, 3 month old Pea chicks running loose in my living room. Felt like we were in the movie Juristic Park. You open the door and 10 tiny dinosaurs come running at you and pecking you.

Don't even want to remember the dust & poop.

I won't tell you how long 'your' California chicks have been outside then! Sure wish I could let them free range on the grass, but the one time I did the assasain kitty sauntered up with a real big, don't they look tasty look in his eyes. We have been getting frost - but it sure warms up in the daytime. Here, the winter season is the bestest!! Summer is
