Funny. I have about 9 or 10 hens in one coop and 9 nest boxes (one built in w/dishpans and then someone gave me a 6-holer). Those 9-10 hens laid in 5 different nests today, but I imagine mine would get used to one nest. I think that even though I've got continually renewed shavings and leaves in the coop (and we feed w/goal of dryer droppings and free range), my hens' feet would be way too dirty for me to be able to consistently get clean eggs out of just one nest. But maybe I could train them to wipe their feet ... they do know the motion for that.
I think I'm just going to hope for warm weather for the week we are collecting eggs for the Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long. I don't plan to set any eggs that have any chance of having been partially or slightly frozen. Mine don't always crack when they freeze.
Congrats on your chocolate Marans hatch.
That's quite a feat. If any chicken should be chocolate, it should be a Marans.![]()
