Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Quote:
Funny. I have about 9 or 10 hens in one coop and 9 nest boxes (one built in w/dishpans and then someone gave me a 6-holer). Those 9-10 hens laid in 5 different nests today, but I imagine mine would get used to one nest. I think that even though I've got continually renewed shavings and leaves in the coop (and we feed w/goal of dryer droppings and free range), my hens' feet would be way too dirty for me to be able to consistently get clean eggs out of just one nest. But maybe I could train them to wipe their feet ... they do know the motion for that.

I think I'm just going to hope for warm weather for the week we are collecting eggs for the Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long. I don't plan to set any eggs that have any chance of having been partially or slightly frozen. Mine don't always crack when they freeze.

Congrats on your chocolate Marans hatch.

That's quite a feat. If any chicken should be chocolate, it should be a Marans.

I love the number egg!!

MAHONRI:---LEVICA? REALLY?

(it is not that I think the name is stupid, I just can't believe you suggested it to a heavily pregnant woman who has face-to-face contact with your clients.)

DO YOU KNOW MY RECEPTIONIST????

My receptionists last day was yesterday and she is currently in labor at Good Sam.

She's only up to a 3 right now. (her hubby is giving me updates every few hours... I LOVE THE GUY )

I'm having beet greens and broccoli out of my garden for lunch. YUM!!!

Thanks for the kind "number egg" comments!

Fresh beet greens sound really good...

I'm starting to think about buying more hatching eggs, knowing I will either have to stack the incubator, or perhaps I can borrow one from school, if no one has reserved it. I'm tempted by those Marraduna Basque hens! Should I pursue them? (of course, I already know what you people will say!

My new incubator came today!

So I thought I should probably go ahead and test it out before the hatch-a-long. I figure I will use the LG as the hatcher, because I'll have to take the eggs that went in today out for the new eggs. Does it matter that I'm going to a still-air for hatching or would you suggest still putting a fan in? And since they will be going in a couple days before lockdown, do you think I need to leave the egg turner in or could I get away with no turner for two or three extra days and then bump up the humidity at lockdown?

We have about 6-7 inches of wet heavy snow here. Still coming down but lighter. One thing I like about snow is since the chickens stay in all day I don't have to close up the coops at night (well, the runs, really). I have auto doors on the coops but I have to truck around each evening to close all the run doors. Not tonight! :p

(of course, tomorrow I am gonna need to shovel and snowblow.. again.. eep!)..
