It took me longer than usual to get to the barn tonight. You see we had company.

Do you see the well worn path to the gate right under her nose? Yep, that's where I'm headed, banging my pots to scare her away.

My plan worked, she moved off just enough to allow us access to the gate. DH tried firing a warning shot to scare her the other night and she didn't even blink. The banging pots only made her go about 10 yards away. Not overly comforting.

After collecting eggs I peeked out the window in time to watch her step over the fence. It wasn't pretty, she gets NO gold stars for grace or style.

Now she was blocking our path back to the house

This time DH tried his technique and was able to at least get her far enough off the path for us to make it back to the house. I'm glad it was still light out, for big huge animals these guys can really blend in to the trees in the dark.

Neat! (and scary). We don't see them too often around here, they're mostly up north. Kinda wish we saw them more often, and then I see this and realize, no... I don't need to deal with that.

I'm exhausted, didn't sleep well last night and I'm up for good now to get to work 2 hours early. I swear though, no matter what I do, I'm up at least 60 to 90 minutes before my alarm goes off - no matter what time it's set to. I was up at 1:15 today, and didn't fall asleep until 9:30 or so last night. It's gunna be a looooong day.

Floozy was very special. Her antics entertained us immensely. I can not believe I am so choked up over this. For heaven's sake.......

This was Floozy. She would not stay in the pen. She must have thought the grass was greener on the other side of the fence, or something.

to get out and the 3rd one looks like she giving you the stink eye for catching her in the act!!!!

Well, the bator is up and running. I have a few days to get the temp regulated but as of now it is all over the place. If anyone knows any tricks, I'm open to advice. It is a stryo Hovabator with a fan and a wafer thermostat. Are the wafers supposed to be warped?

We had a young dog show up at our house tonight, I hate it when people put dogs out. I have to do something with it asap. Noone will be home tomorrow and the chickens free range. Anybody want a puppy? He looks to be around 4 or 5 months old.

razadia may want the pup, I know she's looking for one.

I'm in! Ducks this time. 6 "barnyard surprise" setting this saturday. 2 from a friend/neighbor right down the street, and 4 from craigslist. I'd do more but I don't want to hatch more babies than I can properly care for :) Trying to find Mahonri's post stating how many and what breeds? Got about 8 pages into the thread and gave up! (wouldn't mind a hint...) I was wondering, is there an easy way I'll be able to tell which ducklings are the ones from my friend and which came from craigslist? My friend said she has mutts that have a little mallard in them. The male is black and hens are a black/white mix. The craigslist ones list several breeds but I'm not sure which we'll be getting. We pick up tomorrow. To be honest, I'm not even positive I'll be able to choose. I'm not terribly picky, but I do think the classic yellow duckling is about the cutest thing on the planet. Any particular breed that will hatch yellow? Or at least enable me to tell them apart from my friends' eggs! I'll mark the eggs so that I can tell them apart during incubation, but I know once they hatch and run all over the bator, all bets are off. Ideas? I considered something like a little id band while I can still tell who came from which egg, but then I mess up the humidity for those still working on their hatch.

here is a tip that I will be using for this hatch, It's called a pedigree basket. To make it you need : 1/4 to 1/2 inch hardware cloth, bent to form a box 4 inches to 6 inches square and about 2 inches high. Cut a cover to fit and hinge one edge with wire. now for me, I am going to make the box bigger and HIGHER so that as the chicks hatch, they will have the head space to move any where they please. you do not need to put the box in until lockdown so you will have time to make them. Oh, and I will be using zip ties to keep the box from opening as they hatch. On how to mark the chicks, I use zip ties on the legs, wing bands and color markers on the chicks. I will be making the boxes soon so if anyone would like to see pics of the boxes, let me know on here and I will post pics for all of you to see!!!!!
