Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Hubby is a diabetic. We've found really good success just eating as naturally as possible, avoiding prepared/processed foods, and we try to be locavores. I'm a natural food broker, so it's nice to have good raw foods and whatnot around, but it's important to try not to eat much that's been processed even then. Big thing to know: if your beef has been grass fed its whole life, it's really low in bad fats and cholesterol and high in important fatty acids. It's the corn-fed stuff that's not so hot.
I agree with you 100%

Beef gets a bad rap--I don't think the research is detailed enough or IMO it would show grass fed beef is healthy beef. I find have my kids feed themselves is easy when so much raw food in the refridge. I stopped buying cold cereal long ago.

Candled my eggs tonight, as I will not be able to tomorrow. Pulled 2 seepers!! Not smelly yet but still scary.

Removed 16/92 (17%) of the eggs. 89 of them were shipped. I have never had that many eggs survive shipping. Avecas's instructions were followed except I started turning on day 4 because I chickened out.

Of the 116 eggs I have been incubating, 113 of them shipped, I have pulled 23 (19%). There are a few others that are questionable, but not weeping or stinky so in they stay. Two shipments came very late and one had eggs 10-14 days old, as the shipper accidentally sent me the wrong eggs - these 2 shipments alone produced 12 of the culls. Not counting those 2 shipments, the culls drop to 13% on the shipped eggs.

I need some advice from you all on rotator cuff issues. I have been to the doctor and he gave me pills (Meloxicam) and some simple exercises to do. He said that he thought I would probably have to have some intensive physical therapy to recover my range of motion because it would hurt too much for me to be able to do it on my own. I don't think he knows how tough I am and I like the idea of pushing myself better than the idea of someone else forcing my arm past where it wants to stop. I have always thought that pain was my bodies way of resting areas that needed to rest for proper healing. If my ankle hurts, I stay off it. If my wrist hurts, I wrap it. Here's my question. If exercise and forced motion in spite of pain is the remedy for rotator cuff issues, should I be using it in spite of the pain to avoid the therapy? I have noticed that it is getting somewhat stiff because I am favoring it. The range of motion he demonstrated to me was in my lateral movement. If you put your elbows at your sides and your hands out in front of your body like they are resting on a table, then pivot your hands out to the sides, keeping your elbows close to your body. Kind of like you are spreading your hands wide to clap. I can almost turn my good arm so that my hand is behind my body. The sore one will start complaining at about 45 degrees but I can push it to almost 90 and hold it there a while. What really hurts is washing my hair, hooking my bra, and getting something out of my back pocket. Are these things that I should be making myself do whenever I think about it or should I be "resting it?" Any insight or experiences will be appreciated.

I had a rotator cuff injury several years ago, and simply turning over in bed could cause pain that would take my breath away. Keeping your range of motion is important. Time has been the only thing which worked. It took over two years.

Today's candling was bittersweet. Pulled lots of clears and several duds.

E-bay eggs: Started with 24; pulled 1 clear and 6 quitters; Left with 18
Local eggs: Started with 41; pulled 8 clear and 6 quitters; left with 27
Various shipped egg: Started with 36; pulled 20 clear and 5 quitters; left with 11

Razadia's Eggs (local): Started with 12; Left with 12
ya.gif

CrazyPetLady's Eggs (shipped): Started with 12; pulled 3 clear and 5 quitters; left with 4
Arielle's eggs (shipped): Started with 16; pulled 1 clear and 1 quitter; left with 14
BHep's eggs (shipped): Started with 14; pulled 6 clear and 1 quitter; left with 7

Overall I started with 155 egg and ended up with 93. With most of these being shipped eggs, I think the percentage is not too bad. I do see a trend with certain states having lower percentages than others. I wonder if it has to do with the PO or the amount of handling.

I like packaging materials the the recipient can re-use to ship eggs. Pay-it-forward!

Mary

Good thing. The packaging from the eggs you sent me is now in Georgia

Did you get it unstuck?

I love your pictures, Michelle.

Thanks

I am amazed at how 1 week after the fact, folks are still wanting to join because they hadn't heard about the Easter Hatch a long.

Has the new format made us all that much more "invisible"?

What do you think is the reason?

I'm not used to the new format. I wouldn't be here except someone messaged me on Facebook with a link. I found the Icelandic thread in my profile but I have not bothered to explore. It's not ipad friendly and that's where I do most of my browsing (and where I have the most issues on this forum)

And while some of you say you can't keep up, I have read EVERY SINGLE POST in this thread.

And it wasn't easy!!

DITTO!!!

Meanwhile, my dad set up multiple light sources around the kennel and took the screens out of our windows in preparation for what I'm sure will be a lovely firearms demonstration. Golly gee-whiz, I hope that coon comes back tonight!

Is it bad to wish I get enough quitters to clear out the new bator so I can hide it?

Just kidding, I will probably give him a heads up before he comes home so he is not surprised.

I am going to have to take my 10 year old Himalayan, Smudge, to the vet to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge today.

So Sorry

THis new show said brain fuction is improved too. HE called alzheimers' Diabetes III. Now that's a wake up call!! THe best part it is preventable and simply changing the diet NOW makes a huge difference.

Sorry for the rant. I'm a carb addict and I've had to change my life without the support of the doctors, which are still anti fat and high carb promoters. My life has improved tremendously since giving up breads, sugars, and high starch vegetables.

My DW is a type II diabetic. She has an app on her Droid phone that tracks calories. Last week the App told her she was not eating enough carbs and was eating too much protein. Her cabs were over 40% and the App said she needed to be over 50% carbs...for a Diabetic...Her protein was 23%. I told her she needed more protein, less carbs and more good fat. She checked some more sources and agreed with me. That is the kind of bad information people are getting. My DW went to a nutrition class for Diabetics--turns out the class was focused on how to get insurance to pay for Gastric Bypass surgery

So many Doctors only treat the symptoms instead of treating the cause. And ByPass surgery is SOOOO NOT GOOD FOR YOU! Yes you loose weight, but it has many side effects most of which lead to further complications.

Did you know that a little fat (2 TBS/Day) is GOOD for your Gallbladder?

It is very frustrating when our whole American culture has been fed BS. I talked with my mother who was a big dieter in the 70's and she said weight watchers was 100% antifat, not fats allowed. Atkins wrote in one of his earlier books, that he saw many patients with skin problems because of that. Denmark is currently on the Atkins diet craze. ANd eating tons of butter, etc. THe PBS program still didn't buck up against the Medical establishment, and is maintaining a low fat statis.

Can someone please explain why the Inuets ( sorry about spelling) were not fat people while eating whale, fish and seal UNTIL modern food was introduced?? DAAAA . . .

WHen I was pregnant the first time, my OB/GYN sent me to the nutritionist at the hospital, I came home ranting, "She wants me to eat crackers and peanut butter for snacks and eat 300 carbs a day!!!! " My DH supported what I wanted to do for food. Lots of vegies, whole fruit, lamb, steak, salads, and Ben and Jerry's ice cream now and then.

A couple years ago I scoured used book stores for other dieting books, and found a number of low carb diets. All written by MD's. I like Atkins because he includes all the studies, hundreds of studies, to validate the information. THough the others also have interesting points, or a different explanation which helps me understand the biochemistry.

No doctor has told me, but I have figured out that I am teetering on the brink of Diabetes II. If I eat a high load of carbs, I fall asleep. CLUE!!

I did a lot of baking of cookies cakes and breads to feed my carb adiction; I do not make bread any more except for holidays. ANd I think I have my kids down to making cookies and such only once a week. Of course, if I get a craving, I make a batch and eat it! Arghhh . . . .a work in progress.

Very True, the Inuit People lived on meat and fat, very little vegetation, because that was all there was available to them. Those that still eat traditionally are not obese, even though whale blubber and seal oil are a main part of their menu, used in many dishes. Those who live "a more civilized" lifestyle (ie. live in cities and eat commercial foods) have obesity rates that are through the roof. Their systems literally can NOT handle carbs.

I say 2 things: 1- we already are "those" neighbors andd 2- Its really cute when you try and put your foot down!

I've had a lot of PT over the years from injuries. THe work PT's do is very specific to increase mobility, with some pain, but the level of pain is important for the PT to monitor so that there is progress but not more damage. I've had an ACL fixed via PT only; and my shoulders were so loose I was pulling the ball almost out of the socket which caused damage and pain to the ligaments. 2 months of PT and I'm good--I still do many of the exercises as I will always be prone to this problem. Another time I had a smashed wrist with frozen ligaments. I had a special machine to force the stretching of the ligamants--take 2 percoset and 30 minutes later start cranking. IN this case PT did not work and a specialist cut the ligaments very carefully.

Do the PT. You will get plenty of exercises to do at home and I'm sure you will get it done.

Penelope is one smart chicken.

She hasn't been able to have a water dish, I was afraid she'd fall in and not be able to get out because of her leg. I felt guilty today at work, knowing she wouldn't be offered water all day. I stopped on the way home and bought her a hamster botte. When I got home, I pushed her beak into the end of the tube three times (after first watering her from a dish when I first got home). When I checked back on her a half hour later, she was already drinking out of the bottle.

Chickens are a lot smarter than they are given credit.

I won't have time tomorrow so I'm candling about 15 hours early.

TOTALS....................................................... 23 in the can, 51 remain.

To be fair, the eggs from Maryland were shipped the furthest... That said, I've hatched many of Kathy's eggs in the past and have always had
more than 50% after first candle. This is a first. I'd have to guess that there is a problem in the Sumatra pen... maybe it's just not warm enough yet.

I usually have about 30% not hatch after first candle so I'm expecting about 29 to 35 chicks. I'll be happy.
