Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Funny thing about the moose meat my dad had. His uncle was a Maine Statie and calls up his dad one night. Tells his dad to grab all the suitcases and newspaper he can possibly carry and come meet him and ask no questions. Come to find out, his uncle had come up on a very recent carcass and the poachers had taken off. They butchered it in place, wrapped the meat in newspaper, and filled the suitcases with as much meat as they could carry out. My dad said it was the best eating winter they had his whole life with a freezer full of moose meat.

On another note, has anyone heard from Renee about setting up another thread for the turkey hatch? I have got to start planning on when I am going to ship you the eggs but I don't want to do it too soon.

I've got broodies out the wazoo so whenever's fine. I'd love to see my little banty hatch out turkeys! HA!

Again, in all seriousness, it should probably be soon to allow time for people to sign up that aren't part of this hatch.

Thanks again for the turkey eggs!

I will "ping" Renee then. I know she wanted to set the weekend of this hatch so that means I have to get them out next week. Good news is that "Lurkey" is laying pretty much every day so I can easily send you six of the freshest. I am just hoping that they are fertile. I cracked her first one open yesterday to check but as usual, I stink at verifying fertility on fresh eggs. I know that Tom (not very original, I know

) has bred her but I don't know how often. Definitely not as often as he would like.

He struts around all the time displaying and she pretty much ignores him. (sounds kinda like DH and me

) Oh PM me your address. I will need that

That's so exciting! (And I do love the names). As far as originality goes, my banty is named... wait for it... Banty.
Leghorns are all L'eggs. I'd probably name my turkeys "Turk" but one of my turkens already has that name and I'd get confused.

No, wait, I've got it...name the turkeys "(Tom) Cruiser" (of course) and "Tilley." If there are more than one hen, then call them "Millie," "Billi," "Gilley," that could go on for a while! Or sticking with the Tom Cruise theme, Kat or Suri or maybe leading ladies?

Have I mentioned I love the name game?

A quick question:

Is the poll up for the Most Ingenious Chicken Design Contest? I could be wrong, but I kinda thought ChestnutRidge had mentioned a poll last week. I went to https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/most-ingenious-chicken-design-contest-easter-2012, but couldn't find a link to the poll or I overlooked it or I'm being unintentionally impatient. Help?
Yup. Sorry, I just posted the link a few times here in the thread. It's right here. Voting closes this evening at midnight GMT which is 8 pm EDT. I'll go put a link on the contest page, too.

Oh and one more thing. A week after you set the turkey eggs, set some chicken eggs too. You have probably seen this on the thread but they really do better with chicks to show them the way. They don't imprint as bad as ducks or goslings, but more than chicks do. They are cute. Yeah, I am not so original on the names either. I have a Blackie (well more than one) and a Whitie (wanna guess what color they are?

) Mr. Cogburn is probably the most creative I have gotten. I have a Randy (for the obvious reason), a Goldie, oh and Joe Black (wanna guess what color he is?) and the only other one who has "told" me her name is Curious. She is a small lav AM hen that always cocks her head to look at me.

Candled last night, am very grateful that I have been reading here, because I had something happen that has never happened to me before, but read that it had to a couple of others on here, and then...there was the advice! I had an egg stick to the turner. I thought, on no...it's going to break if I try to force it any more than what I'm doing now. Then I remembered what I read..yep, a little bit of water just around the egg..and it worked loose. Candled it, and it was not good, I could feel little sticky spots on it, so knew it had started to weep. So, thanks to those that gave the advice on how to get a stuck egg out of a turner! Can't remember who you were..sorry, lots of posts here..lol...just glad I read that.

I'm the oldest of six and we raised rabbits. Dad always butchered'em. Mom used to fry them up and then pour bbq sauce over'em and bake them for 30-45 minutes.

Our daughters wanted some bunnies and I told them that we could do bunnies and then we could butcher'em and eat'em. They quickly changed their minds! LOL!!

Now you roped me into another hatch by saying it was "just turkeys"... and now the entire truth comes out.

I feel so violated.

My favorite chicken name is "FatOne" - every time someone looked into my brooder when they were babies they'd go "Wow! Look at that fat one." It stuck. I must have given her a complex because last summer she was broody for 16 weeks and almost starved to death.
