Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Ok, so today is hatch day for me. I don't have 1 single pip. Is that normal? I did however hear one of the chicks screaming at me from the egg when I walked in the door from chores. I thought it had hatched it was so loud, but I was wrong. So I pulled up my chair by the incubator and I heard a very quiet peep, and I haven't heard anything else.

Any calming words for a first time hatcher?? lol

I let them yell from inside for a full 24 hours, and if nothing is going on yet to allow them outside oxygen after 24 hours, I pip the VERY top of the round end a tiny hole the size of a pencil lead around. This keeps them from suffocating without allowing the membrane to dry out and stick them in.

The usually get down to business within a few hours.

If you try to do more, you'll risk a much worse fate for them than if you sit on your hands. Sometimes they don't make it, but my experience has been that those you break the rules for die in the first few days, anyway. We can't know what else might be keeping them from getting the hatch 'normal.'

how long is to long for a goose to be in the air sack and no pips? I a getting nervous. I have heard it and it is getting weaker. been about 36 hours since it first started cheeping.

See above answer, but find someone with goose experience. I've only hatched a couple. It seems to take longer, but you may want to be sure the oxygen level isn't too low by giving a teeny pip in the end, which won't interfere with normal pipping and zipping. Good luck!!

Happy Sunday All

I have cleaned out the Genesis I use for hatching. This will be the fourth time I have used it in as may weeks. I still have one more and then will take a break.

This is my most recent hatch- 7 FBC Marans:

This is one taking a ride on my Youngest Daughters Shoulder. Amanda helped me check the air cells today for my EO Basque Eggs and the Cream Legbar eggs. She agreed that they are where they are supposed to be according to the Brinsea Chart:

Very cute! Cute chicken too.

They are getting close! If you haven't had that one yet. It must be pipped on the bottom. Should be seeing more pips..any more yet??

Shinx! I so love that cake! Did you smooth the potatoes to a more creamy texture? Must have to get it to look like icing. Pretty cute. I would have loved seeing faces when that cake was cut into.

Is the blue real icing? Yummy on meatloaf? lol..

Here's the recipe for the Amish Friendship Bread starter: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/amish-friendship-bread-starter/

As to the cake- I actually used the instant potatoes that I prepared for the "frosting". I'm kind of a purist, and it was the first time I've ever bought them, but I needed that smooooooooth texture for the prank to work right. Then, I dyed some of those instant potatoes blue and used my icing tips to decorate the cake. It was all potatoes though. My family thought the instant potatoes were great, and I have bought them since because they thought they were so good.

I LOVED the egg art- I can't decide if I liked the anatomy lab or murder scene best.

THanks for the starter recipe!!

I 'm a purist too but when the kids were very small 3-5 yrs old, I found the instant potatos were a marvel. I still doctored them up the only way I know: salt, peper, milk, butter and dried oinions. WHen making mashed potatos fresh, I add 1 small onion. What can I say? My mother's mashed potatos are awesome, and so were her mom's. Besides, onions are very good for you!

I'm still WOWed by that "cake"!
