Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

When I went to check on my eggs at the exact time I set them, 21 days later, I found that three have officially pipped. Funnily enough, two of them were the black copper marans eggs that I thought seemed further behind in development. There were two more that I *thought* i could see the start of a pip, but it was just too soon to tell.

It's killing me, but I don't get to check on them again until tomorrow morning, which will be 18 hours from when I last checked them.

Hopefully, all six will be out then and I can turn in my numbers before the noon deadline.

It's gotta be the mamma's poo. I suspect those chicks were under a broody and that's why it says that one of the chicks got eaten (by mom, I'm guessing). Broodies save up their poo and go all at once in big globs. And it smells extra special, too, because of all that hard work of hatching chicks.

I think It got eaten by one of the other hens but I am not 100% sure. So I had put her in the cat carrier that night to try and prevent it from happening again.

I do know why animals eat their young.

If you're one of the 112 that have filled out the form for how many you've hatched, THANK YOU.

If you haven't.... get to it! Only a few hours left.

Looks like a few people have filled in the form . . . but we need everyone . . . . I need to know the total. It's killing me.

I am guessing it was the broody mama. As a mother, I do know why animals eat their young.
HERE.

My hatch is finally over. I set 91, tossed 44 that were clear, 33 in the brooder and 2 still in the incubator. One of the two will probably not make it, bled a lot while hatching and the other one is fluffing up. 1 pipped and died and 11 didn't hatch. I am thinking I had such late hatchers because my incubator was accidently turned off for 8-10 hours and the temp went down to 78 degrees. I am happy with my results even with the 44 that were clear. These are mixes from my own flock and I wasn't sure on the fertility. At the time of collecting I had 22 hens with only 3 roosters, now I have only 12 hens and 2 roosters. Lost the rest to stray dogs last Thursday, a very heart wrenching experience.
I am looking forward to the next hatch-a-long. Now if this weather would cooperate I could get the lil ones outside in their outside brooder, but the way it looks it will be a couple of weeks before I can do that.

Granny

Sorry for your loss, Granny, I know what that's like and it is not fun. Congratulations on the fuzzy replacements, though!

Wisher no offense, you weren't the only one to mention the poo. I wanted to do it immediately but thought I would be blackballed. I was kidding about not being rude because you guys were braver than me.. It's funny tho how it stood out so much, couldn't concentrate on the adorable chicks.

None taken DD! I was just having fun! I still love you!

Hello! This was my first hatch. It was very exciting!! I set 27 eggs, 24 went into lockdown, 19 hatched. I had 10 local eggs and 17 shipped, all 10 of the local eggs hatched, 3 of the shipped eggs were infertile, and 9 hatched. I think 19 out of 24 is pretty good. I'm enjoying the chicks!

Yay! Congratulations on your hatch! 19/24 is GREAT! It's better than most and WAY better than mine (0/46.) Chicks are fun, aren't they?

Well, I just committed to participation in the Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch... I can't believe I am doing this again!
