Mahonri's NYD Late Bloomers thread

Noooooothiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnggggg... changing my name to Col. Sanders. I think I've fried my chickens.

I did have babies hatch - but am mourning those that didn't. Those that got right to the point of hatch and apparently failed. Sucks! My husband and I were talking this over and wondering why I have nearly 100% hatch rate under a hen but not in an incubator? (my incubator had no big humidity or temp. changes) I wondered if the hen talks to them and somehow encourages them to pip, or to keep zipping?
Glad you started this thread. Maybe we can all hold one another's hands.

I had 4 more hatch this morning. I used to use my Hovabator for hatches and had TERRIBLE results, time after time. I bought an old 70's green incubator and hatcher pair pre-sportsman and wow am I impressed with the results! I had a lot of temp issues I think, three different (expensive) thermometers said differnet things in the Hovabator. No guessing with the big professional ones.

It's terrible having bad hatches

I'm so sorry for you all who are having no luck this time around. big hugs all around!

Did you get ANY out? So sorry! I honestly thought I'd be there, especially after helping this pipper out when I think I should've left it alone.

I'm going with local and locally shipped eggs this time as compared to some ChickyChickyBaby is sending from across the country. Can you find someone on Craigslist who sells eating eggs? I emailed one and she had a rooster that she says has been getting some action and a hen who recently hatched some eggs, so I went over (literally 2 minutes from my house!) and watched her take eggs out from underneath her chicken so I could set them in the incubator. She only charged $3 a dozen, too! May not be fertile, but there's a chance!

How many of you are trying this again? I saw that Judges4 had ordered some eggs. I've invested so much in this, not really the money, but the time and emotions. I'm so frustrated! I'm not sure, at what point I'm supposed to take them out and call it finished.

I feel ya. I am very unsure as to whether I would order again. I have however had great success with eggs from my own hens. I would recommend you try buy local fertile eggs and try one more time before making a final decision not to do it again. Wish we were close enough for a real hug - but a cyber hug is the best I can send you. Kelly

I got Zilch! I got 6 eggs from a "local" breeder (It was an hour drive each way). $6. All 6 were fertile and grew well. ?????????????????????????

I wait until Day 25, and that's what I'm doing this time, too. Still have 3 eggs left.

ETA: I am in for the Chinese NY Hatch, and the Easter Hatch.

I tried to hatch 9 eggs, only got 1 good chick and one deformed chick that was weak and died shortly afterwards. So sad, as I gave them to a friend and she was heartbroken. Next I bought 7 really expensive duck eggs, NONE hatch or even developed at all.
