Maiden Rock Bantams

This past fall I purchased Dan Powell's flock of Maiden Rock bantams. I will continue to breed all three patterns - penciled, spangled, and laced - to their completion when they will be available for sale. Dan has given his full support and is consulting on the project. Please feel free to send an email regarding them anytime.

Can anyone tell me about your experience with Maiden Rock Bantams? My primary concern is laying. I've heard they lay a blue egg is that is large for a bantam, but can anyone tell me how large? Also, how often do they lay, particularly in winter without a light? Thanks!

I can relate the little bit of experience I have so far. I have 11 Maiden Rock hens that I got as day old chicks. They are about 9 months old now and they started laying around 4 months. I didn't keep any records over the summer, but my guess is that I was getting about 8/day from them. Over the last month it has declined to more like 4/day. I still have most of the MR eggs from the last month in the fridge, so I just weighed them all (112) and the average was 33.5 grams. They are a very pale blue, though some are darker. Also, while I'm reporting stats, we butchered most of the roosters at 5 months and they averaged 1.5 pounds each.

I am thinking of getting some eggs to hatch. Most of my land has fragile soil. I have to be careful Do these birds tear up the ground a lot or are they not big scratchers?

Spring has finally come to Minnesota! Here are some recent pictures of the penciled/spangled flock.

Hello, I don't know if anyone still reads this thread, but I have the last remaining bird of Ryans flock, a citron spangled maiden rock hen. I would like to get a rooster for her to carry on the genes, does anyone have any maiden rocks they would sell? Eggs, chicks or adult birds?

Jonathan Burton used to have some Maiden rock Bantams, along with greenfire farm - not sure if either of them have any left.

What color is this hen you have?

I have all of Dans sebrights that were used in the making of the maiden rock bantams - Could get a rooster and then line breed them again.

Okay thanks! She is citron spangled, with absolutely no comb or wattles. I don't really know anything about genetics, but I don't want her line to die out.
