Mail Order chicks arrive - almost all are dead! Help!

Hummer, just be patient and let your hatchery deal with this. Most hatcheries are reputable and replacing 10 chicks won't hurt them at all. I think you can rest assured the hatchery and the post office will be extremely attentive this time around and see to it you are satisfied with your delivery.

Okay everyone,

I have been doing some checking into Cackle Hatchery. I am leaning toward trying them. I am sure that Ideal will ship more chicks - but I just don't have a very good feeling about that.

Upon checking reviews for Cackle - if you go to Dave's Garden you can find review after review of positive feedback where 100% of the chicks arrived alive! Shipments were for June and July that I was looking at. Even with some confusion on the ordering - most of the people could not have anything negative to say, because all chicks arrived alive and healthy. That sounds very encouraging to me.

EVEN birds taking 3 days to get to Maine!

It may just be a sales pitch - but the info on their site makes it sound like they go to great lengths to make sure that the chicks arrive alive and healthy. I even read where there is a form to fill out and send to them if the chicks are mishandled during shipment. That makes me feel like they care and want to know things like that so that they can do something about it. Who better to get the post office to do what they are suppose to do, but the hatcheries themselves? ALSO, the site says that you can place your order and request what month that you would like to receive them - that means that I could wait for a little cooler weather if need be....

BTW - I was able to figure out how to search for chicks for sale on this forum in my area. I did not find any close by.

If anyone has any negative or positive to say about Cackle - I sure would like to hear about it!

Thanks,

Hummer

Hi Hummer,

I posted this info on another thread last night. So, if you've seen it some where before...or at least have that "feeling" - that's why.

Yesterday, my order from Cackle arrived. I ordered 10
Blue Silkies, 5 Assorted Silkies and 5 Cochin Specials. They sent me extra 3 extra babies...the same type of chicks that I ordered...not "packing peanuts" - the chicks were shipped out on Wednesday - I live in Nebraska. I expected the shipment to arrive on Friday morning (today). I was surprised when the Omaha Post Office called me at work yesterday saying my chicks were in Omaha. I live about 20 minutes North of Omaha. The guy on the phone told me he was about to leave for home and could drop my chicks off at my home on his way home - if someone would be there to accept delivery. My son was at home and the chicks were delivered at 4:30pm. They were all doing very well. They've been doing great ever since.

I'm so sorry you have had such disappointment and heart ache over your chicks. It's a bummer. I do want you to know that I've ordered from Ideal, Murry McMurray, Metzer Farms and including this order from Cackle...I haven't had any losses at all this year.
Infact, over the last several years I've had no shipping losses and have only lost a few chickies...very few. I tell you this...because I so want you to have chickens! I bet your next experience will be much, much better! I'll be holding good thoughts for you!

I'm so happy that you are willing to try again. Good luck with your new order...keep us posted.

im soo srry i just wanted to say that i really dont know anythin about ordering chickens i only ordered ducklings and i did that from Metzer Farms in Cali soo im soo sorry but if you ever order ducklings they are the ones to do it from

I had two orders from Cackle last year. One did very well. The other did not. And the order that did not do well faded, they didn't arrive dead, so I fussed with them a long time.

However, many people have had very good luck with Cackle. I would never say not to use them.

There is a whole thread about Cackle Hatchery on here. There was a recent post so it should be right up on top near the beginning of posts under incubating.

I am not saying that you should not get chicks from Cackle, but when a hatchery has an order that goes bad they should be given the opportunity to make good on it, it seems to me. How else are they going to know that something went wrong and put it right?

At present, and I have gotten quite few orders of chicks in the past, I am inclined to think that I will always for the future deal with Estes.

Ok, referring to my previous post, I looked it up, the name of the thread is: How is Cackle Hatchery.

You should be able to search and get it to come up, but that is the name of the thread.

Good luck whatever you decide.

After re-reading some of the post I owe you an apology - My retort

should not have been directed to you - It was Baycitybabe that was doing the very good job of making me feel even more guilty than I already felt in thinking that the ckicks all died because I ordered them in July heat! Please accept my apologies!
