Mail Order Chicks Lost in Mail

I placed an order with one of the hatcheries for 12 new chicks, they supposedly were mailed on Tuesday. It is now Thursday morning and USPS tracking shows nothing in tracking. No one seems to know where my chicks are. I spoke to the hatchery and they don't seem concerned. Their answer was just to call them if I don't recieve the shipment by Friday.

My question to you, all my wise friends, is--1)how long can they live cooped up in that box during shipping? 2) Has anyone else had this experience? The outcome?

I'm worried that I will recieve a shipment of dead babies. They are insured but that is not the point! They were sent Priority Mail from Texas to Florida. That should have only taken two days max. The hatchery told me they would arrive Wed.

Sometimes it takes up to 72 hours.Did you get them from Ideal?

Ours were shipped on tuesday night and arrived here in Rock Hill,SC this early morning. Thats a little more than 24 hours but less than 48.

Does your local post office know you are getting chicks? Do they happen to have your phone# so the post office can contact you when they come in?if you didnt leave this info with your post office,go ahead and do that now.Otherwise you are waiting the long wait like most of us do.

I can see your concern and the hatcheries non concern if they do arrive DOA, They routinely lose track of shipments and are of the mind that once they leave their site oh well it's the PO's fault. Now the day old chicks can survive for 2 sometimes 3 day's but even then they will be week and unthrifty/dehydrated. Sorry to say but it is just something you have to live with when dealing with a hatchery. I do hope it works out for you though and your chicks arrive safely, give them some sugar water and a vita-pak as soon as they arrive and manualy make them drink.

I belive its the post office who loses track, can't blame the hatchery for something the post office did.
The hatcheries have been in this long enough to know they can't cry over every box of chicks the post office miss place.
Thats like me blaming the post office for giving me the wrong chicks, not llike they had any controle over what the hatchery puts in the box....

My post office gets deliveries in twice a day. 6:30 AM and 12:30. Do you know when your post office gets the trucks in? Tracking is never posted right away. Some of the hatcheries like McMurray have tracking that means zip. I have had live chicks at 3 days often with no losses. I worry about your small order. Are you getting packing peanuts? I had live adult chickens lost in the mail for 4 days. The PO found them in San Diegio and sent them to me. They where alive but later where sick from the stress.

Thanks everyone. The babies arrived safe and sound. Four hours later the post office sent me an email to let me know the box had arrived in Orlando. So much for their tracking system. I'm such a worry wart.

They are so=o=o=o cute! I got 5 Black Jersey Giant pullet and 5 White Jersey pullets plus one rooster of each. My broody cochin took them immediately and they are all cuddled with her in a seperate pen.

I'm so glad they arrived safe. Do they seem strong and healthy? How many hours were they in the box being shipped?
